If God is for us, who can be against us. The Lord is my helper, I shall not fear. We are more than Conquerors through Him that loves us. Daily devotions enhance our relationship with God.

I Am An Overcomer!

“What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?” Romans 8:31. “So we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?” Hebrews 13:6. “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” Romans 8:37. “For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:38-39. And yet one more in the eighth chapter of Romans. “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?” That's verse 35.
Have you ever thought about just reading the entire chapter of Romans 8? That's where you go when you're having a bad day. That's where you go when your spouse tells you they don't like the way you cook bacon. That's where you go when the coach yells at you for making a huge mistake. That's where you go when your dog bites you for no apparent reason. Just before you get the shovel.
We all have rough times in life. If life were always fun without any obstacles we would never grow as a person. Besides that, it would be as boring as watching paint dry. How could we possibly exist without anything to complain about? Trees grow deep roots because of the wind. Flowers grow when the seed dies and deteriorates. We build our character around events and relationships in our lives. So going through life without difficulty or disappointment is a fantasy. But what about those times when life gets really turbulent? I know from personal experience, there are times when you can't even put one foot in front the other and move forward. Does that eliminate the promises quoted earlier? Of course not!
It's in those very times when we have to lean on those promises and others to keep going. That's why it's so important to spend a little time each day with God. Praying and Bible reading are so important to our Spiritual lives. It's that time that allows those really terrible times to be less of a hurt. They still hurt, don't get me wrong here, but it's like a pain killer. It takes the edge off and makes it bearable. Remember this verse? “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you?” That's the first part of James 4:8. We do that with our daily devotions.
Serving God is a little like exercise. The more time you put into studying God's word and in prayer, the closer you get to God. Of course the closer you get to God, the easier it is to weather life's storms. Don't you think billy Graham had a few bad days when his kids were growing up? Or when he got a call while on the road that didn't go well? His life may look charmed from the outside, but once you look through the windows it takes on a different view.
Another trap we fall into at times is comparing our life to others. You can't do that!!!!! Every last one of us are who we are because of the events in our lives and the relationships we have had. And every last one of us are as different as fingerprints. So thinking “I wish I could trade lives this person or that person” is nonsense. If you truly knew that persons history and what they have been through, you might not even want to be friends with them, much less trade with with them.
I became friends with Les Brown back in the 90's. Not an intimate friend, but a distant friend. He called me “Sacramento” because he still can't remember my name. Some of the stories he tells on himself are not pretty. He was born on a floor in an abandoned building by a mother who was high at the time. He was raised by his grandmother. Told he was educationally mentally retarded. But a teacher once told him, “someones opinion of you does not have to be your reality.” He began to make different decisions and quit calling himself stupid and dumb. He made a decision to become somebody. Sometimes the hardest thing to do is to make a decision not to let life dictate who you become, but you dictate to life who you are. You're in charge of your life, no one else. You will answer to God in the end as to what you accomplished, or didn't. The deeds that you did, or didn't do mean something to God. Not only are we going to be held accountable for the thing s we have done, but what about the omissions we allowed to pass us by? Sins of commission and omission I've heard it put at times. God has opened doors for us and we shut them in His face. Can I get a big fat “oopsy” here?
Psalm 37:4 tells us: “Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.” Psalm 34:8: “O taste and see that the Lord is good; how blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him.” Isaiah 40:11: “ Like a shepherd He will tend His flock, in His arms He will gather the lambs, and carry them in His bosom; He will gently lead the nursing ewes.” So the logical conclusion to this message is: Get as close to God as you possibly can. God wants to be with you and work for you on your behalf. Let Him do what He wants to do. Let the Maker of this entire Universe be your best friend.
Schedule the time to be with Him. I do and it works great. Are there times that get in the way? Of course! Do you think the devil is going to sit by and pout because you're reading God's word and spending time in prayer each day? He's going to do everything he can to interrupt that time with God. It's who he is. Just like a dog has to bark and bite cats. Just like water flows downhill. He is who he is and he acts like it too. So determine withing yourself to not let anything get between you and God, including the devil himself. Besides; we have read the back of the book and the devil goes to hell. We know how the story ends.
You can do this, you know you can. Do it. Flex that Spiritual muscle and do what God has called you do. God's promises are true and just as real as the day He made them. I want to meet you in Heaven, but I can't if neither of us make it there. Come on, make it a date with God each day and watch how things change within you and your life. It can only get better when you do.
Let's go to Heaven together and leave this crazy world behind.
