Why teaching was a wonderful profession

As usual, Google reminded us that yesterday was Teacher's Day. True. November 27th has always been a day to appreciate our teachers' work in the classrooms. When I was a school girl, we had a day off. It was, perhaps, to give teachers an extra break.
As far as I'm concerned and if I look back, I had several teachers. Some of them were very good on dealing with talkative and quarrelsome kids besides knowing how to teach their subjects. Others were not so good and it seemed that they worked on teaching, becaue it meant a stable job with long Summer holidays.
In past times, I've read that school teachers were very much appreciated and respected people in society. In these days, their status has changed a great deal, but not for the better.
Everyone that ignores what the job is really about are against them when problems arise. More often than not, such problems have nothing to do with them and their teaching.
I've always said that it isn't a teacher's job to teach pupils good manners and respect to other people, but this is primarily parents' job. Teachers are to contribute and certainly they will, but kids must go to school already taught on this.
There was a time when school children wore uniforms, but this custom was abolished when socialdemocrats and communists (*) entered in education institutions and in schools. This created a problem, because not everyone has money to buy their kids smart clothes to show at school. On the other hand, many of them went to school very badly dressed and untidy. So, the education authorities thought of reintroducing uniforms in schools again. There was a discussion in the media and I recall a radio talk show in which a teacher called up to have his say. “I don't really care whether children wear a uniform or not, but I'm fed up with having to see their underwear coming out off their pants or blouses. Can't parents mind the way their kids dress to go to school?”
For what I see outside and because I've also been a school teacher, parents seem to have resigned of their task to educate their children at home and the result is a bunch of spoilt and badly mannered brats.
A teacher has enough work to teach his subject well enough to attract his pupils to what he is teaching, but parents are obliged to teach their children good manners and respect for other people, especially for their teachers.
In the past, teachers were very much appreciated and respected, but on these days, they are treated as if they were scum by everyone and such treatment turns a wonderful profession into a hellish one.
(*) It's known that socialdemocrats and communists have always been against uniformity and discipline in the classrooms, but wearing a uniform is good practice as no one will feel less for not wearing smart or expensive clothes and discipline has never done any harm. Good discipline is to teach a child to do things when everything has to be done.
