Why do people feel the need to rant? Is it because they want to share their misery or because no listens to them otherwise?

Ranting: Why We Do It

Recently a friend of mine sent me an e-mail ranting about something her mother did to aggravate her and it got me to thinking about all the times I have ranted about something someone did. It dawn on me I never e-mail the person I am mad at and rant, I e-mail someone not involved and complain to them. Why? Because as mad as I am at the person, I don't want to hurt them, especially if I may be wrong and not valid in my complaint.

I also need to talk about my feelings, so I don't hold them in and then explode at the person I am mad at. So really, I am doing that person a favor, right? I am ranting about them to someone else. Now, I want to point out that I do not tell who I am talking about, that would be gossip and completely wrong of me. No I just rant, not using names. Now the worse thing is when I hold it in and explode at someone else, completely innocent. I have not done that in a long time, because I do not like me, when I do that.

So, here's what I do, I talk to the person and tell them how I feel. Someone might be hurting you without realizing it and they are not going to realize it, if you don't tell them. I have hurt people before, without meaning to, because I did not understand where they were coming from.

Ranting can release anxiety, but talking about your problems with your friend or family member is much better, because that will lead to the problem being solved. We all see characters on television who keep secrets from each other and then everything blows up in their face when the secret is revealed, right? We sit there watching it, saying how dumb they are, then we turn the television off and instead of telling our friends how we feel, we keep it from them, like a secret. Funny huh?

Talking out your problems is much better, leads to a calmer you.

I like your approach. Very good advice. I think people rant for both reasons you stated: because they want to be heard and because they are upset and need to vent their anger and frustrations.
