Scripture admonishes us to to 'love and serve the Lord only' with our heart, mind, soul, and strength. Yet ~ we have a choice as to whether we will adhere to this admonition.

What Does It Mean To Be Loyal?

Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary Tenth Edition offers the following to define the word 'loyal':

unswerving in allegiance
faithful in allegiance to one's lawful sovereign or government
faithful to a private person to whom fidelity is due
faithful to a cause, ideal, custom, institution, or product:

Faithfulness To One To Whom Fidelity Is Due

Spouse to spouse fidelity is for the most part generally accepted as being desired behavior,

In many employment situations, signed confidentiality agreements are required.

In Christianity, adherence to the Living Word is highly recommended.

We Get To Decide Whether To Obey

We have been given a challenge in the 24th Chapter of the Old Testament Book of Joshua in GOD'S WORD Translation to:

“Fear the Lord, and serve him with integrity and faithfulness. Get rid of the gods your ancestors served on the other side of the Euphrates River and in Egypt, and serve only the Lord.

Remember ~ we are free moral agents. So the right choice will not be forced upon us. We have to willingly decide to do what we know is right.

The Scripture in the Book of Joshua continues by saying: But if you don’t want to serve the Lord, then choose today whom you will serve.

Now ~ that is straight and to the point ~ and here is how the people responded:

It would be unthinkable for us to abandon the Lord to serve other gods."

Various precious promises were made in the Old Testament to Abraham and his descendants. In the New Testament Book of Galatians, Scripture says that if you be Christ's, then are you Abraham's seed ~ and ~ heirs according to the promise.

From that, one can readily deduce that the following verses ~ in the 30th chapter of the Book of Deuteronomy ~ can be appropriately claimed by born-again believers.

The passages below are found in the 30th Chapter of the Old Testament Book of Deuteronomy GOD'S WORD Translation (GWT)

The Lord your God will give you many blessings in everything you do: The Lord will again delight in making you as prosperous as he made your ancestors. He will do this if you obey him and follow his commands and laws that are written in this Book of Teachings and return to the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.

It is clear that He wanted them as well as us to realize that this command isn’t too hard for us nor beyond our reach. The words of His command are very near us. They’re in our mouths and in our hearts so that we will obey them.

It is incumbent upon us to think clearly as we choose between Life and Death

He continues the admonition in Deuteronomy 30 by saying: Today I offer you life and prosperity or death and destruction.

This is what I’m commanding you today: Love the Lord your God, follow his directions, and obey his commands. Then you will live and the Lord your God will bless you.

He goes on to make it abundantly clear by emphasizing: But your hearts might turn away, and you might not listen. You might be tempted to bow down to other gods and worship them. He continues thusly: If you do, I tell you today that you will certainly be destroyed.

As a point of re-emphasis, He states further: I call on heaven and earth as witnesses today that I have offered you life or death, blessings or curses. Choose life so that you and your descendants will live. Love the Lord your God, obey him, and be loyal to him. This will be your way of life, and it will mean a long life for you
