When did you last hear a leaf fall to the forest floor?

Is your life so busy that you forget to pay attention to what is going on around you? What would it feel like to be mindful enough to hear nature in it's noisy glory around you?

When did you last hear a leaf fall to the forest floor?

I went to the forest with my kids this afternoon. The leaves are just beginning to unfurl. Everything is covered with the optimistic smudge of green that heralds the start of new life and Spring.

Whilst we were running around picking up leaves and looking at the bluebells, we heard a woodpecker knocking away on a tree. We stood in silence peering up into the tree tops trying to see it.

While we were still and quiet, we heard a gentle and quiet popping noise. At first we thought it was another bird yet couldn't see anything. Eventually the kids decided that it must be the leaves making a popping noise as they unfold into the world.

I love this idea. It might not be botanically possible, yet I like the mindfulness the kids exhibited. Imagine hearing new leaves being born?? Imagine being so connected to life that we could see and hear more than we do right now?

This got me thinking. How often do we take the time to stand still and actually watch the world around us, and really listen to what is happening?. How often are we caught up in the hectic-ness of getting the next train, or seeing the messages that have come through on our phones? Does the hectic-ness that seems to be our norm stop us from connecting with ourselves and the natural world around us? How often are our brains full, and our hearts empty?

Wouldn't it be great if we could re-dress the balance, and find a way to get more mindful, and less mind-busy?

What sort of opportunities do you have in your daily life to stop, take stock and check in with yourself? I heard William Bloom, the spiritual teacher, say recently that one of his practices has been to stop every hour and ask himself 'where are you now? how are you feeling now?'. This sort of routine can help build self awareness, and bring more attention to being present in the moment. It can be the most self caring and self loving thing we can do for ourselves.

If we can learn to be present and more in the moment we have more chance of being able to stop and hear the leaves pop into life. Why not take a moment to breathe, and spring into life?
