The story of life is when we have lived a full life, our total existence is shown in a "dash."
The day of our birth is represented on the headstone, "the dash" and then our final day on earth. The Good News is, God loves us and we can have more from Him. "He will joy over us with singing."

What's In A Dash?

Answer: Everything Important

The question of why we exist and who is responsible for our existence has always plagued mankind. It is a question every human being wants answered. We have all speculated and asked -“who am I?” We go on to ask, “Why am I” or why was I born?

Our perception of self is rooted in how we grow in our cultural setting. We are given a sense of who we are in our family first. We are taught basic skills of personhood at home. In a Christian home, we begin with the premise God created us. We concede that not every person is born in a Christian home but the home is where we connect with kinfolk and develop individuality and character. We come into a sense of identity.

We all live between the “dash” of our birth and our death, no matter how rich or how poor we are. From birth to age twenty one, give or take some years, we are learning, developing and gaining an education. We develop physical, spiritual, and social skills. Many will take charge and become defined as to their purpose in life.

The next 50+ years are the productive years of life and we have either chosen to live in accordance to God’s plan or we have chosen to exist in life in a state of self gratification. Our choices in life define the quality of our existence and how we feel about the gift of life.

People of faith in God will use the “dash” to serve God. Others will use the “dash” to serve self and have judgment rendered against them. Paul speaks of this in his letter to the Corinthian church; the Aramaic term is called maranatha. It reads:

I Corinthian 16:22

“If anyone does not love the Lord, he is to be accursed. Marantha”

When our tenure on earth is ended and we have filled the “dash” in life, the way we filled the "dash" will express how we felt about the gift of life given us by God.

Some eulogies are brief, with not many accomplishments in life. The "dash" seems hollow and unproductive. Some will use their "dash" to serve God and to serve man. These people are like works of art; they empower the people left behind.

Finally, let me finish this article with how much God loves us. This is a beautiful scripture that speaks of God's love, it is a “love note,” to encourage us to make our “dash” count –for GOOD.

Zephaniah 3:17

“The Lord thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; He will save, He will rejoice over thee with joy; He will rest in His love, He will joy over thee with singing.”

I have been self-analyzing about my existence and trying to add meaning. I feel embracing the poor and empathising with them gives me great satisfaction and peace of mind. Taking each day as a gift also helps. Thanks for a thought provoking piece Ms Ann - siva
