What Love Can Do

In my humble opinion, the greatest blessing we have in this world is to be loved. We are even more blessed if we love back, love does make the world go round. I don't want to sound as if I am preaching because I am far from perfect myself, but if more people showed love towards one another, instead of fighting over such things as religious differences, or even something as mundane as who owns a strip of land, how much nicer our world would be.

Love comes in many forms, but the one that I want to talk about is the love of a parent for their child. It's usual for a mother to love her child, both before it's born, and then afterwards. Whatever pain or discomfort they have suffered, is quickly forgotten in the euphoria of becoming a mother.

When a child with special needs is born, they need your love even more than ever, as they will need extra support all their life.

My life changed when Phil was born

I have always done my best to love, and treat my children equally, whether I have succeeeded is another story, and to embrace their very different characters. Anyone who reads my article knows about Phil, my gorgeous son with special needs, who is now 40 years old, and will always be my Peter Pan.

When he was born I knew nothing about autism, and although he had many difficulties, that part of his character, if you can call it that, was not diagnosed until he was 2 years old.

He was my third child

After already having a boy and a girl, I felt I knew a liittle about children until Phil came along, and he was totally different. He didn't like to be touched, or hugged, and if I took him out of his pram to feed him, he roared with anger, only calming down when he was fed.

I didn't feel as if my child loved me, but still I couldn't stop pouring out all the natural love that a mother has for her child. After all, when they are older, they have the ability to hurt us, teenagers particularly can be very cruel, and no matter how much we might dislike them at that time, we still love them.

My other children did too

Because we have always been a very demonstrative family, my other 2 children also hugged Phil a lot, and played with him and stimulated him in any way they could. No matter what difficulties he had, he was still their brother and they loved him.

Phil has always done everything at his own pace. The doctors said he wouldn't walk, but he did, falling into my arms after his first step, and I couldn't contain the tears of joy and pride that he had done it.

They also said he wouldn't live past 5, but he has, his health is stable, and although he can't speak, he understands what we say to him, and he knows he is dearly loved. He decided a while ago, that hugging was nice, and spontaneously comes up to us to deliver a bear hug at any time he feels like it. That gesture of love is so precious to me.

I truly believe that being loved has helped Phil to live and blossom as a person, and I urge anyone out there who has a child with special needs, to give them all the love you have, even if at times they don't appear to return it. You are not alone, it's tough, but you will get there, because I firmly believe, love does conquer all.

God bless the child-man, he is indeed special. Autistic children are very gifted in certain areas like Maths and Music to name a few. These are elements that keep them going and keep them calm. Tap them they are super-intelligent.

Carol, what wise words and done with so much love. I was not going to do much on wikinut tonight, as my new computer is not working well but, I had to read and leave a message on this page. Phil is one lucky man, having a mother like you. You never cease to amaze me with your love, compassion and total encouragement you share with your child. Heck, with all of your kids. I can tell. It is a honour and a priviledge to have met you. This page is worth all the stars in the sky. Hugs to you and to all of in your family. As always, thank you for sharing.:)

Thanks so much Stella. Nobody on here knows me off the page, it is just through my articles. Some of these fine writers may have left now, but am pleased to have your support in reading it.
