I love being a senior citizen able to enjoy my leisure activities with friends and family without the necessity to go out to work each day. Life holds so many joys and promises; each day brings something new. Thank you, God, for a wonderful life.

What I Am Most Thankful for in my 90th Decade of Life

The past decade has been a difficult time for many people. The economy, the war in the Middle East, drugs and violence all take center stage in our daily newspaper. We can't escape the gloom that seeps into our thoughts without a conscious effort to think positively.

Despite this state of affairs, I am mindful always of the blessings I have received over the past eighty+ years of my life.

I am thankful for the gift of my husband who passed away twenty seven years ago but left me the legacy of three children whom I cherish every day of my life. My eye is always on the future as they and their children reach milestones which I want to share and celebrate with them.

Of course, I am grateful for the good health that I have been able to maintain over the years which keeps me active mentally and physically. My days are filled with a variety of activities and the independence to choose which ones I will do today. Even a trip to the mailbox has the ability to ignite my enthusiasm.

I am grateful for the friends who have graced my life and have contributed to the wonder and the fun of discovering new adventures and remembering old ones.
I am thankful, too, for the passion I have for learning. I treasure today's technology which acts as my teacher - television, my computer, the local library, all provide opportunity for me to acquire new knowledge. I am especially grateful for my Book Club, a group of twelve ladies who, for the past fourteen years, have expanded my mind at our monthly book discussions - books which I might never have picked up on my own.

I am thankful for the formal education I received. My parents, who never finished high school, provided the means for me to achieve a college education. Later, my husband had the insight to sense my need to continue learning and encouraged my graduate education.

I have been so thankful for my Catholic faith which has sustained me day to day, minute to minute. My horizons have been broadened through the saintly people I have associated with in our search for God in daily occurrences. As a Mercy Associate - a volunteer group of lay women who help the Sisters of Mercy in their ministries - I am in awe of the goodness of people who quietly work for the poor and suffering in our midst.
There is so much to be thankful for - the change of seasons right outside my window, sunset over the lake, the smile of a stranger, a hug from my grandson, a wave from my neighbor, the first snowfall, a good night's sleep, an invitation to lunch, a package in the mail. All of these contribute to the good life for which I am grateful.

It is beyond my comprehension how I have been blessed. Today, I am thankful that I can look back on a life filled with both happiness and sorrow, ease and hardship, wealth and poverty, work and play. I pray often and humbly for those who have not had the advantages and blessings that I have received.
