Visit of my grandchildren.

My grand children visit me every year during their summer vacation and bring a lot of cheer with them. The whole house comes alive with their laughter.

My grandchildren.

Three of my six grandchildren visited me and left on Saturday to be in time to attend their school in the USA on Monday. Every year they visited us I used to put up some banners to welcome them. This year I did not due to my wife’s illness. During their stay for about two months, my wife and I enjoyed their company. My wife, although bedridden, mustered all her reserves and looked after them. Of course, the servants helped us to a large extent.
Our grandchildren filled our lives with immense joy. When they left, we could not help crying. As I sat down to write about them, this poem emerged. I am not a poet and not familiar with the meter and rhyme, but this poem is straight from the heart. I used to call them headaches, thunders or lightnings. This year they gave me the nickname Granny-pa.

Granny-pa has grandchildren six
Three of them forever a problem to fix
Angels, demons and blithe spirits
They roam around the house free
Yelling, shrieking, fighting and on a wrecking spree
Rocketing granny-pa to peaks of delights

The youngest, the sweetest rascal if there was one
An elf in human form or a leprechaun
Swift on foot and a yen for chocolate
Fancies an upper cut and mushroom haircut
Punches the air, noses, and anything in the way of his hand or foot
When in trouble, curls around in a way canine
Not a whack but gets a kiss instead.

Cute and a pretty sight, the middle is, often, a riddle
Cool as a cucumber and sweet as honey

Stands her ground and demands her right
No second thought to get into a fight
Thinks crying is her birthright

The eldest way too bizarre for any poet
Tall, handsome and fair to boot
A disarming smile, dreamy eyes shining bright
A heartthrob in not distant sight
Clever and often too clever for the rest
His middle name is mischief
Lords over everyone including his mom
Prone to create a violent storm
Swings his arms and feet without a thought
Wants to win his battle at any cost

Three headaches, lightnings, imps
They answer to any name
Call their grandpa many names
As well as granny-pa
But stole his heart long long ago.

They leave a deep void when they leave
For one full year it will be
Before their next visit
Grandpa and granny count days and wait
The gloomy walls yearn for a cheer and roar of laughter
Hearts cry and eyes await the spark
Until the schools close next year.

Oh God, bless our grandchildren
And bless us to be here when they return.

I just love when you write about your grandchildren, my heart breaks for you and your wife, as I know I miss my grandson (our only, so far) the moment he walks out the door. I think your poem was perfect in heart, soul and just enough to make you laugh, every now and then. My grandson is asleep in the next room at this moment, he is two and you know that age, he wears me down but... In all the right ways. Blessings to both of you, especially to your wife. Just a joy to read. As always, thank you for sharing.:)

My dear Denise O,
Many thanks for your comment. I am so glad it passed muster as a poem.
Grandchildren are bundles of joy, and I am indeed fortunate to have six of them. They all live in Orlando.

your poetry touches my heart,
I read it more than once
ere the start …
you have not exploited your ability
and could have composed
such lively poetry,
is incredible for me
about others I can't say any!

but your heart speaks
its full of gold
like you perhaps
I may not be that old
but grandkids I too have a few
my they all love me through and through.
I sacrifice all that I have
well not money
but all my love and kisses so many

when they come to home you know
what they think of me
the bald man of hearts
the King and Queen
combined in one
they say grandpa
can you adopt us now?
we love you most
come to and stay with us somehow…

I love them from the bottom of my heart
I only wished my heart
had no bottom,
well I love to share tis true
the love Judy did
with all of you.

My dear LOVERME,
I somehow seemed to have missed this lovely poem all these days. Excuse me for the delay in my response. You are a natural poet whereas I get poetry when my grandchildren visit me. I am glad you could empathize with me and my love for my grandchildren.
