Today is an auspicious day for the women in the States of Andhra Pradesh, some parts of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

An important Hindu festival on the name of Vara Lakshmi Vratam is performed on the second Friday before the Full Moon in the month of Sravan which corresponds to English month of August.

Significance

The name Ashta Lakshmi consists of eight energies that are known as Bhu (earth), Saraswati (Wisdom), Priti (Love), Kirti (Fame), Santi (Peace), Tushti (Pleasure), Pushti (Strength) and Sri (Wealth). Each force is called Lakshmi and Vishnu, also called Lakshmi Pathi , asylum for the Ashta Lakshmis, radiates these forces from him, according to Hindu Mythology.

As abstract force is beyond imaginary for ordinary people, Ashta Lakshmis are personified and worshiped as Lakshmis. It is said that health, wealth and prosperity depend upon the rhythmic forces of Ashta Lakshmis.

The worship of Lakshmi on this particular day is observed largely by women, because Lakshmi is a woman who readily sympathizes with women and invoke blessings on .them, their husbands and their children.

Story:

On one occasion, when Lord Shiva and Parvati were engaged in a game of chess, Parvati was winning game after game. But, Lord Shiva had claimed victory at each game. So, Chitranemi, a creation of Lord Shiva, was chosen as an Umpire.

But, Chitranemi sided with Lord Shiva unjustly which provoked Parvati. Out of rage, Parvati curses Chitranemi to become a leper for his unfair manner.
When Chitranemi begged pardon, Parvati modified the curse by adding to be cured of leprosy by observing Vara Lakshmi Vratam. Later, by observing the Vratam, Chitranemi could get rid of his loathsome disease.

The origin of Vara Lakshmi Vratam is rather interesting. The Vrata Kadha (Story) narrates that Goddess Lakshmi appeared in the dream of a pious lady by name Charumathi, who devotedly served her husband and in-laws. The Goddess expressed her satisfaction at her devotion to the well-being of the family. Charumathi woke up from her sleep, took bath and worshiped Lakshmi and ensured her blessings. When heard about her dream , other ladies began to worship Lakshmi for the well-being of their families and the custom spread throughout the land. Vara Lakshmi Vratam is observed seeking the blessings and boons of Lakshmi even in modern times.

When she woke UP from her sleep, she took a bath and worshiped Lakshmi to ensure her blessings. When the other ladies heard of her dream and her worship of Lakshmi, they too began to worship her, and the custom is then said to have spread everywhere throughout the land in course of time.

"Padmaasane Padmakare sarva lokaika poojithe
Narayana priyadevi supreethaa bhava sarvada"

Vara Lakshmi Vratam is performed with no restriction to caste/creed. Even day, the faithful of modern times observe this tradition.
