Flying on a plane with a baby can be stressful, especially if you are doing so for the first time. From regular feedings to diaper changes, you have to take care of a number of things and also worry about your baby catching something while traveling.

12 Tips For Traveling With A Baby On A Plane

The good news, however, is that your baby is not as fragile or vulnerable as you imagine. With the right kind of prep work, taking your baby with you on a plane should not be a problem. Given below are 12 tips for traveling with a baby on a plane.

1. Request your airline for a bassinet seat for your baby. Bassinet seats are more comfortable and spacious and airlines generally allocate them for infants and toddlers. Since there may be other parents traveling on the same plane with their kids, make sure you contact your airline and book the seat well in advance.

2. In case your request for a bassinet seat is declined for some reason, bring a soft mattress with you. You can put it on your lap and let your baby sleep comfortably.

3. Make a checklist of all the essential items you need. These include diapers, wipes, blankets, change of clothes, formula, pacifiers, and a bunch of Ziploc bags to keep soiled diapers and clothes separately.

4. If your baby is old enough to eat snacks, pack a bunch of them as well. The best snacks are the ones that can be sucked right out of a tetra pack or tube.

5. Pack your baby’s favorite toys, books, and play things to keep him interested throughout the flight.

6. Make sure you bring your stroller. Many airports, particularly international ones, are huge and the distance from the entrance to the security checkpoint to the check-in counter to your gate could be really long.

So, having a stroller is absolutely essential. You can take your stroller through the security checkpoint and take it with you on the plane itself. Many airlines allow strollers and seat-restraints to be checked for free.

Some, like American Airlines, have restrictions regarding the stroller’s weight. So, make sure you have a light weight stroller – one that is small and light enough or foldable enough to pass through the x-ray machine. Read more at here: http://hifivebaby.com/best-tandem-strollers/

7. During takeoff and landing, the sudden change in air pressure can cause your baby’s ears to hurt. To avoid this, breastfeed your baby or make him suck on a bottle or pacifier.

8. Airlines generally do not have any restrictions regarding breastfeeding on a plane. So, always carry an extra blanket or two and a couple of safety pins. You can pin the blanket to the seat and create your own private space to breastfeed your baby.

9. While dressing your baby, keep in mind the fact that you may have to take it off several times during the flight to change the diapers. So, pick something that is easy to take off – onesie with leggings are a great choice.

10. If your airline does open seating, make sure you sit next to families, rather than people who are traveling alone. Firstly, there is likely to be a baby or toddler in the family seated next to you, so your pipsqueak will have company.

Secondly, being parents, they are likely to be far more sympathetic to you if your baby starts crying incessantly for some reason.

11. It is next to impossible to shield your baby from germs while traveling on a plane. There are, however, certain things you can do to lower the chances of your baby catching something.

Firstly, make sure he is properly vaccinated.

Secondly, wipe the tray table, armrests, and other surfaces that your baby is likely to touch with an antibacterial wipe. Wash your hands before preparing the formula or snack pack.

12. Do not hesitate to ask for help if you need something. You are certainly not the first person to travel on a plane with a baby and not likely to be the last.

The attendants are probably used to dealing with families and single parents traveling with babies and toddlers. Whether you need an extra blanket or pillow, need to warm up a bottle, or anything else for that matter, simply ask the crew.

Also remember to put your child on your lap and have the extension belt on as there are no bassinets while taking off and landing. With that a feeding bottle or a pacifier would do great to prevent ear aches. Oh, always safer to check with the doctors before a long haul flight.
I took mine on a 16 hour to and fro journey to India via Bangkok, Thailand and loved it.
