A few days ago the International Day of Tolerance was observed as an annual ceremony. The world needs tolerance and nonviolence greatly at this hour. The UN has called for this day across the globe as an attempt for the dawn of global peace. But what is the position of tolerance in the world today? Has tolerance really dawned across the globe?

UNO’s efforts to promote tolerance

This year’s International Day of Tolerance was observed on 16, November. Initiated by the United Nations, this day calls for the universal attention to educate people about the necessity of tolerance in society and helping them understand the negative effects of intolerance.

UNO’s efforts to promote tolerance

United nations Organization(UNO) came out with the Declaration of Principles on Tolerance that were adopted and signed in Paris by 185 member States of UNESCO on November 16, 1995. The signatories who signed this declaration pledged to promote tolerance and nonviolence in their countries through educational policies and programs.

It is really very encouraging that the United Nations has shown its great interest in the spirit of tolerance through several means. This year the message of the UNESCO has been for a focus towards educating people about the need for tolerance in society. Of course, there have been programs here and there organized by some voluntary organizations and educational institutions. But it does not seem to have touched the conscience of the leaders of the countries.

Promoting tolerance through educational institutions

Educational institutions have launched many projects to promote tolerance among different cultures and religions. They have launched various traditional and nontraditional teaching methods such as puppet shows, exhibitions, music programs and films to educate tolerance among the growing generations. They have dealt with tolerance, multiculturalism, global diversity, and proper religious understanding.

Why tolerance is needed mostly today?

People of most of the modern nations are composed of various racial, ethnic, cultural, religious and social backgrounds. They represent a variety of lifestyles and ideologies. The trend of this 21st century is growing more pluralistic.

But modern globalized world has become so selfish and commercial that the great values of human life are weighed only on the balance of personal profit. Political and social spheres of modern days have become corrupted and rotten. Tolerance is more needed today than it was in the days of Buddha and Jesus.

If modern world prefers the success of democracy and human freedom, it has to open the portals of tolerance widely. Unless there is tolerance no nation in the modern world can exist peacefully. Tolerance is the base from where peace, health and prosperity can blossom and flourish. The dove of peace can dwell and live only in the valley of tolerance. Tolerance is the life breath of peaceful co-existence.

Another very nice article V. My nickname for the United Nations is Useless Ninkimpoops because they have done absolutely nothing to promote united anything, literally millions of people are opressed and starve and die while they make millions and enjoy all the perks of the elitist class. My biggest issue with those that promote tolerance is that they are usually the least tolerant elitist members of society. The definition of tolerance is tolerance and yet it becomes an oxymoron, you can't have your cake and eat it too. If we just went back to sticks and stones may break my bones (as long as you don't blow people up and kill them) but words will never hurt me and get rid of this stupid PC crap, the world would be a much better place. To be honest, the inhumane injustices that transpire globally will not end until the day and the dingle berries at the UN are not or ever going to help.

I hope blowing the horn for peace and tolerance will awake at least a few benevolent hearts. Thank you dear Robb.

You are so right! We need tolerance more today than ever! All of our differences are part of a giant rainbow full of color and love!! If we are bothered by a person's points of view then we need to pray for them and keep on loving them no matter what. Love always wins in the end! However one thing I won't tolerate is killing of the innocent! Too bad we all can't just love one another like the Bible teaches!!!

When I was young I imagined religion as the means to world peace. My wish was a good one but my understanding of sociology and greed in the world were lacking. Good share vpaulose
