Securing Schools

The schools are one place where kids spend majority of their time and the recent violent attacks on schools only signify the importance of making the schools secured so that our kids are not threatened by such acts of violence in future. To prevent and counter such incidences in future, we need to have a strong security system at the schools. For almost every parent, the safety of her or his kids is of paramount importance.
A school is a place where kids go to study and learn new things and explore their creativity, therefore it would be hard to imagine security checks and restrictions in schools, but we should learn from our past and take adequate measures to safeguard our kids from being subjected to violent attacks. Enhancing school security would require a lot of funds; therefore it is important to figure out the necessary means where the funds are required to spend.
• A safety plan
The schools need to have a safety plan in case of fire or natural hazard or in case of an act of terror. This plan needs to be made in consultation with a professional security expert which would be able to provide safe and quick evacuation or a safe place to hide with adequate food and first aid supplies. This plan should be briefed to the students and timely drills need to be conducted so that the students are prepared for the adverse situations.
• Continuous Communication
The schools should be in constant communication with a third party security provider using the alert systems, two way radio communication and security checks so that the latter can provide assistance in times of need when rescue is required. This communication will help the school security to remain alert to suspicious individuals or objects.
• Metal detectors for schools
These metal detectors pick up any objects like guns or other metallic objects like knives. This will prevent the entry of such objects beyond the school gates thus proving to be the most effective tool against the violence caused by such deadly weapons. After the latest incidence of attacks on students with armed guns in the schools, people have realized the importance of having metal detectors in schools to prevent such incidence from occurring in future.
• Zero Tolerance policy
By installing metal detectors, sensors and security cameras one can completely eliminate violence caused by forming gangs and by carrying harmful objects in the school premises. These security equipments help in detecting the threat and prevent it from escalating to massive proportions. The schools should adopt a zero tolerance policy and the guilty parties should be severely punished for their actions making them accountable for their doings. The management should enforce a ban against wearing gang related clothing, prevent them from leaving the school premises during lunch breaks or for any other reason and make it mandatory for students to wear ID cards as it makes easier to pass through the security checks. This can help in creating a safe environment for the students to study barred from the unwanted distractions.
• Response and Mitigation
The schools should have an emergency or a permanent security centre to respond to the threats that have occurred. The response time for the local law enforcement department may be longer for some reasons, so the schools should have security staff that can respond to such threats immediately and take care of the situation from growing into massive proportions. Mitigation means the actions taken post the occurrence of the incident where the incident is of longer duration. For example, during a hostage situation, there should be a person who is familiar to such situation and experience to deal with it. It is also important for this person to complete knowledge about the area and surroundings using the floor plans and facility maps to devise a strategy. The easy access to such information can help in creating cognitive orientation for a positive outcome of the situation.
• Risk Prioritization
Most schools are held back by their restrictive budgets and are not able to accommodate everything. In times of multiple threats, it is important for the schools to prioritize the risk and work towards dealing with the riskiest proposition if dealing with multiple propositions together is not possible. Just by using gadgets and guards one cannot overcome unwanted situations, effective planning and management is required to formulate strategies to eliminate the threat. This can only be done by proper risk prioritization.
These tips are helpful for the school management to upgrade and strengthen the security of the school, but it is also important for every student to be aware of the situations, use common sense and courage to face them instead of panicking and be responsible for their own actions as they consequences.

Maybe we need to address the kids rather than the schools. Perhaps parents need to be more involved with their kids so that kids do not have so much anger in them that they take to school.
Adding metal detectors is a way around the problem but does not solve the problem.

I think metal detectors are a "tool" that can help cope with the problem. It's true that if parents spent more time with kids and if families were together more we would have less crimes. BUT... until that happens we need to do something now.
