A "tertulia" is an informal gathering on which some people meet regularly to talk on a choice of themes and to practice the art of conversation.

The art of conversing in a group

It was in the 90's when I used to leave home every Tuesday at around half past nine in the evening to attend my literary “tertulia”. It took place in a cafe nearby home and started at 10.00 pm. to end in the small hours.
Tuesday was, therefore, a happy day, because I knew that after work and supper, I was going to meet some pals to talk on a choice of topics and needless to say that this “tertulia” would heat up a lot during the discussions.
A “tertulia” is a cultural activity well deep in Spanish cultural life since the 18th Century. These “tertulias” always took place in cafes or taverns, starting in the late evening till, as I say, to end in the small hours. There were themed “tertulias” on politics, literature, sports, art, bullfighting and in some of them, outstanding politicians, writers and journalists were members. We have to say that some of those “tertulias” really gave an influence in Spanish society.
On these days, such a tradition has changed a little, although, there seems to be a revival of the old “tertulias”.

This isn't a virtual conversation with other people, but one in which people will meet in a cafe or in a bar regularly to talk on a given topic. They'll never take place in a private house nor they will be closed to anyone who wishes to join in. Every member is to be respected no matter what their views on a certain topic are like. It'll end when the owner of the premise tells them he's to close.
This type of activity is good for everyone, because it takes us out of the nest with a purpose to join in a group to practice something that nowadays seems to be losing and this is real conversation on a given topic. It expands our horizons and makes us know whether we are right or wrong on what we think as sharing points of view with others can't, but benefit everyone of us.
