The alarming rate of abuse in nursing homes
Seniors in nursing homes are abused at alarming rates. We need more spot checks and government safety intervention.
Conditions in nursing homes
Last week I wrote about assaults in nursing homes. Many nursing homes are crowded and the frail elderly often suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s are being accosted by younger violent patients who are housed in the same nursing home. Montrealers find this absolutely atrocious and families who are searching for nursing homes for their loved ones must thoroughly investigate where they are placing their loved ones.
Nursing home abuse stats
Sometimes Montrealers will not have a choice. Their loved ones have to be placed in government homes because of lack of finances. Even then prudent Montrealers will inquire and visit the sites frequently.
The renowned journalism program W5 decided to compare the abuse of the elderly reported to the police for elderly not living in a nursing home and compare that to the number of cases actually reported in nursing homes. W5 was able to get the information through the Access to Information act. Remember that we are talking about actual reporting in the nursing home and it could mean there are more left unreported. The same would hold true for the general public.
W5 chose Ontario because it is the one province that actually does the best reporting of nursing home abuse, which means that Montrealers are left in the dark as to what the real stats are in our province. In Ontario the deaths are actually reported and investigated by the Office of the Chief Coroner.
