The Thanksgiving Spirit

The Thanksgiving Holiday is here again but there is something wrong. What is it? This article explains what is missing.

The Changing Thanksgiving Spirit

Happily America prepares to celebrate Thanksgiving. On a sour note I don't think we, as individuals or a nation, celebrate with the same spirit of thanksgiving as the first celebrators. I fear Americans are losing authentic thankfulness as they grow ever more covetous and worldly.

It is no mystery as to why Americans fail to have the thankful spirit that is suggested by the Thanksgiving Holiday. There can be no real feeling of thankfulness without the acknowledgment of God and Him as the source of all that we have. Christians can have a heart saturated with genuine thankfulness because the triune God lives there – God the Father, Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit.

If anyone truly celebrates Thanksgiving it is those who know the source of all goodness and all “good things.” James, the writer of the epistle with his name, wrote, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights...” How can we not have thankful hearts when we know that God is the Giver?

In their usual festive ways the lost multitude will feign being thankful for what they have this Thanksgiving. We Christians, on the other hand, can joyfully express our gratefulness in prayer and public profession for God's bounty. We know that God has graced us and gifted us both in this earthly life and the eternal one to come.

A true thanksgiving spirit can come only from God's Holy Spirit within. Not at Thanksgiving alone but every day we ought to be filled with thanksgiving and direct it to God through prayer and public praise. I end this devotion with two thankful sentiments from the Word of our God – the God of our thanksgiving.

King David said, “That I may publish (proclaim) with the voice of thanksgiving, and tell of all thy wonderous works.” Psalm 26:7

Paul wrote that Christians were “Rooted and built up in him, (Christ) and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.” Colossians 2:7

May you celebrate Thanksgiving with a truly thanksgiving spirit.
