That's the way life is

My take on what it must feel like for a child and his parent to say their farewell after the break-up.

How could this happen to him?

When he was ten, his parents divorced. Of course, his dad told him about the separation, because his father was his favorite.

"My boy, I know it has been difficult for you these past few days and I don't want to make things worse, but I have to tell you something. Son, your mom and I are getting a divorce."

"But, dad.."

"I know you don't want this, but we have to do it. Your mom and I simply don't get along anymore. I have already packed my bags and I'm heading to the airport in half an hour."

"But, dad, why do you have to go?"

"Well, your mom and I can't live together anymore".

" I got that part, but why do you have to leave town?"

"Because I have someone waiting for me in New York."

"But, dad, will I ever see you again?"

" Of course, buddy. We'll figure out something."

"What? I live in California, you'll be living in New York."

"Maybe your mom will agree with your spending some time with me, a couple of weeks during summertime and a couple of weeks during the winter."

"Why not more often?"

"I hardly believe she'll agree to this arrangement at all, so hoping for more time is out of the question."

"But it's worth a shot."

"I know, son, but we'll talk next time. My plane takes off in twenty minutes and I have to get to the airport. Now I'm taking my bags and I want you to go to your room so as not to see me leave. We are not saying goodbye for a long time."

"Ok, dad. Goodbye and don't forget to write."

"I won't. Goodbye and go to your room."

"Ok, dad. I don't want you to go."

"I know, my boy. But I have to do it."

"Why?"

" You can't understand."

"Yes, I can."

"No, you can't."

"Ok, goodbye."

"Goodbye. Now go to your room, quickly!"

"Ok, I'll go. I guess that's the way life is sometimes."

"You're right. That's the way life is."
