Believe it or not, those taboos still influence Indonesians. Taboos are beliefs in society and can not be explained scientifically.

What is Taboo

Taboo is human being's expressions toward some behaviors or statements which are believed will give bad influenced to other human beings or members of society, whether for the reasons of social beliefs it self or for social values within society.
Believe it or not, those taboos still influence Indonesian society in their behavior pattern and social values. Some taboos are known in Indonesia and taboos during the pregnancy period are believed by some of Indonesians, especially they are living in rural areas.

Don"t ever do....

There are some taboos for Indonesian women during their pregnancy period. They have to follow some informal rules if they want to get birth safely. Followings are some taboos for pregnant women:

Killing animals
A husband or a wive may not kill any animal, although only a cockroach, during the pregnancy period. If one of them do not obey this taboo, their baby will get bad destiny.

I have a story about this taboo. One of my neighbor (a young woman and her husband) in South Kalimantan got birth a crippled child, his body is full with fish scales. From mouth to mouth, it was because my neighbor's husband fished at the river near by their house and he cut the fish for food.

There is another story of this taboo. A young woman got birth also a crippled child because when she was pregnant her husband killed a mouse in their house. Her husband hit the leg of the mouse with a stick before then he killed it. After getting birth, the woman knew that her child is crippled. One of her child's legs is smaller and the shape of the smaller leg is like the leg of a mouse.

Cleaning every holes
During the pregnancy, a woman should clean all holes in her house: toilet, sink, and so on. It is in order to give the being baby a smooth way when the time to get birth come.

Don't stare at other people
Don't stare at and talk about other people because your child's face will similar with those people you starred at. Or, if a pregnant woman stare at another woman's or man's face too long, then her baby will have similar face with the man or woman she starred at.

I don't know does it relate each other or not. But, when my mother got pregnant of my younger brother, my mother always wanted to stare at a black monkey. And then when my mother got birth, my younger brother's body was full with black hair (similar type with the monkey's hair). Maybe, my mother was lucky, because my younger brother's face is still similar with my father' And the hairy body of my younger brother could be cured well by my grand father.

Moving to another house
During the pregnancy, a pregnant woman may not move to another house. If she does it, her pregnancy period will take longer time.

Believe it or not, when I got pregnant my second child, I moved from one house to another house. At that time, my pregnancy was in the seventh month. And, I got birth when my pregnancy was in the tenth month. Did it has a relation with this taboo? I can not answer it.
