Every parent will have to experience this sooner or later but being prepared for your first child going off to college can be made much easier.

Start Early

As soon as your son or daughter have picked a college and have been accepted the clock is ticking. Make sure you know th ins and outs of what needs to be done to make the transition simple. Don't expect our child to know exactly what is going on and that they will pass the information on to you. I found that getting information from my son was lie pulling teeth.

Do Your Homework

The best way to find out what you will need to do is go to the college website. They usually have most information a parent needs to be albe to start the process. If you have questions don't hesitate to call the department that can answer your question. I found the admissions office to be the best place to start. They can steer you to the other departments you may need to speak with.

Lists, Lists, Lists

Don't count on your student to know what they need when they move in to the dorms. By making a list and adding to it as you go makes life so much simpler. This will make sure that on the day of moving in you are not running the local store to pick up the 10 items that were forgotten. I also found that talking to parents with kids that are already living on campus can be a big help they have already done this and can steer you in the right direction.

Moving Day

Explain to your son or daughter that packing on the day of the move is not the best choice. Things will always be forgotten. An orderly move will start this transistion out much more smoothly. Enlist siblings or friends to be on hand to help 3 or 4 trips up three flights of stairs can get to the best of us. Once the move is made your part is done for now. Rest, relax and enjoy!

I am a mom and wife who loves to write and I always have. When getting my undergraduate degree I found out that not only enjoy writing but I do it fairly well. I continue to find ways to work on my writing and maybe someday I'll even write a book!
