Why you should focus on local and independent retailers for your Christmas shopping this year.

Introduction

In the advent of internet shopping, the choice presented to us as consumers is astounding. It may be tempting this Christmas to get your shopping from one of the big players, but everyone will be doing just that and it leaves little room for any imagination. You can make someone’s Christmas special this year by giving them a unique gift from an independent business or retailer.

How the market is changing

There are, of course, many physical and online outlets competing to provide a wide range of gifts this Christmas, but none could possibly be more unique and intriguing than what an independent business can offer. I have someone special in my life and I simply don’t get the opportunity to show them every day how happy they make me. I feel if I bought my man socks or aftershave every year it just wouldn’t reflect well on him or me.

There is a growing consumer desire to purchase Christmas gifts from smaller independent businesses for many reasons. Supporting the local businesses in your community is important for the growing economic success in your particular area, as well as its reputation as a hotspot for shopping and great products. Also, there’s presenting a loved one with a one-of-a-kind Christmas gift.

The benefits of buying locally

Living in Brighton, I know the pleasure of going out shopping and buying a unique trinket from an independent jeweller or a piece of clothing from an independent designer. It is important to support local businesses and give them a fighting chance against high street stores. Not only does it benefit your community, but you’ll have the chance to see look on someone’s face when you present them with a truly unique gift; the unexpectedness! That unpredictable moment captures the reason I love giving Christmas gifts so much.

The bulk of these amazing independent retailers started out life online, in most cases this is where you’ll find the majority of great independent retailers and products. The internet age offers anyone the opportunity to offer their services and goods; rest assured there will never be a shortage of unique gift possibilities to explore online.

A few ideas that’ll make you very popular this Christmas

I’m of the opinion that food and drink is what independent business owners truly excel in making and providing. Christmas food should always evoke feelings of festivity and delight, and if you want to experience this quality for yourself I have two pieces of advice. Firstly, check out where your local wine specialists is located and explore what they have to offer, chances are you will be completely smitten by their selection of wines (or craft beers for the fella).

Secondly, in the interests of keeping the entire family happy, stock your home up with a selection of Christmas biscuits and cakes, such as the traditional gingerbread men or Christmas themed baked goods and cupcakes; an assortment of edible Christmas treats is sure to keep everyone very happy.

If I can't afford to buy, I still enjoy making my Yule gifting.
