Spanking, the wrong route to disciplining

If you, in whatever capacity you are placed in life, think by spanking your kids you can enforce discipline, think again, it is worse than the remedy; for studies abound with scientific proofs that spanking of the children by parents or teachers create an indelible negative impression on the children about fairness and leads antisocial behavior

Scientifice evidence

Murray conducted a study tested the hypothesis by using the data available from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth-Child Supplement of 807 mothers of children in the age group of 6 and 9 years in which they had taken into account the economic status, sex of the child and emotional support they had received from the family while growing up. Within the target group, 44% of the mothers were in the habit of spanking their children at least twice a week. These kids exhibited anti-social behavior, shockingly, higher the spanking at the beginning of the week the greater the intensity of such aggressions. The study drew the conclusion that more the parents realized about this folly of theirs, the better for them and the American society which is already entrenched with problems associated with violence particularly of the youth. When such behavior deficit children, strangely having become deficit not because of their fault but because of the behavior of their parent(s) enter school, the negative academic and social experiences tend to surface in the open resulting in their being excluded from learning and interacting with peers, teachers and others within socially acceptable norms. The relationship with the teacher-student and student-teacher becomes a vicious circle, when the teacher uses spanking accompanied by criticism and sending them out of the class to enforce discipline and children returning to the class with more hatred and undesirable conduct. In their research while preparing a guidance manual for parents, teachers and children, Carolyn Webster-Stratton & Jamila Reid, M have noted that the teachers while handling the children in the age group of 3 and 7 with conduct problems ordered at least 50% of such students out of the class room three or more times. They found that the kids being treated in an unfair manner aggravates the problems further at times to the extent of their becoming school drop outs.

When excluded from leading a normal childhood life, it results in such children forming groups with deviant peers aggravating the risks of their indulging in socially abusive activities as drug addiction and or violence. The evidences of ill effects of spanking are so strong that it may need more political attention they what they at the moment receive.
