This short piece looks at coinciding events of the past and how they color the present, no matter how we try to move forward.

Shadows of Pain

Seven years ago today my dad died. We knew it was coming, but thorough preparation is never possible. So as Labor Day ushers in the change of seasons with fall always having been my favorite, so too it brings the anniversary of the greatest loss of my life.

One year ago this past week my precious endured a massive surgical procedure that we had hoped would quell years of pain and suffering. Her ensuing need for care demanded that I resign from my job, which I did without hesitation.

Yesterday was that lady's birthday. We lightly joked that Dad waited just long enough to die so as not to ruin her day. Of course that was not possible. And one year after I turned a career into history, the agony remains. Living for 'the now'- living in the moment is too idyllic a concept when the now is laden with such weight. I quietly weep for all she has endured at my side and together we ache- for what was lost and for what seems may never be. You deserve better, my love.

Death is just part of life - an advice that is easily proffered but some void is too tough to fill. But then again, life has to go on looking ahead - siva
