Rural Living: My Worst Teacher Ever

I was raised in the country. No, we didn't do any farming, just lived out there on a little tract of land. I went to school for a year and a half at a small country school - a two room school house and that was my worst time going to school.

the worst teacher

I was raised in the country....not that my family had a farm or did any farming. But we did have thirteen acres in a rural area for a long time. My father continued to work in town in an ice cream factory. Mom had a few chickens and planted a bit of a garden but that was about it.

However, the neighborhood that this house was in, had a "country school house" which had two classrooms and a cafeteria. The cafeteria is where I got introduced to apricots as a dessert. Very good in fact.

The classroom was where I got the least amount of education it was possible to me to get in a year and a half. Yes, I managed to fail the first grade the first year and almost did the second again, till they moved me to one of the city schools. Once I got there, a year or so later, they were talking about skipping me a grade I was doing so well.

So what was the difference? There were several. One was that i did not get along with the neighborhood kids. The other might just have been the teacher.

For part of the time, we had two classrooms and two teachers. But, unfortunately, that pretty quickly changed to one teacher, one classroom for all 8 grades. What made it even worse was that the male teacher that was left had narcolepsy. At least that is what I think it is called. Anyway, we would be watching him at the front of the room, and yes, there he went sound asleep.

He would just nod off....and then suddenly wake back up with a jerk.

Not conducive to teaching 8 sets of class material and give any sort of attention to the process, much less give any attention to the individuals in any of those grades. I am thinking THAT is why I failed first grade.

It was also sort of funny, watching him just nod off, and lose all contact with the real world.

What was your worst teacher like? Feel free to share.

I think it is very sad that you had this experience and lack of real education.

Fortunately, they got me into a "city school" the next year and I did well enough that about 2 years later they were talking about advancing me a year..skipping the third grade I think it was. Fortunately they decided that I was already young for my grade group and didn't.
