From an article that I've read in the Panorama Magazine last July I think.

What is Visual Literacy?

According to International Visual Literacy Association (IVLA), "Visual Literacy is the ability to discriminate and interpret visual actions, objects and other images while gaining meaning from them." The majority of information absorbed by human beings is collected with our sense of vision. It is a key element to communication to create, use and evaluate images.

According to scientific studies, recognition of visual images comes early among children, long before they even begin to read and write the alphabet.

Children Today

In this digital age, children are widely exposed to the use of computers, internet, video games, mobile phones, and other devices that can harm their sensitivity. Children are exposed to visual stimuli that affect them in positive and negative ways. But being young and innocent, they cannot discern yet which among these stimuli are helpful or dangerous for them. Watching television is one of the elements that affects the visual literacy of a child. They might watch shows that have scenes exclusively for adult viewers only that can cause negative interpretation and idea for them.

Role of Parents

At home, it is best for parents to prepare a visual literacy rich environment for their children, filling up their rooms with educational visual aids such as Alphabet and Number charts is one example of this. Parents should guide their children in interpreting images for better understanding of their environment. bonding with children by reading books before he goes to bed and watching T.V. together is one of the best examples of this. Parents should be vigilant in regulating their children's T.V. and computer use. Parents and guardians are responsible to every child's development, simply because they are physically close to them.Home is indeed every child's first school.

Sight is a powerful sense to learn. As guardians of children, a parent must not leave the formation of their young minds and moral values solely to the influence of images that can harm them.
