Pure Religion

What is pure religion as defined by James in the Bible? It might surprise you just who are the widows and orphans are.

Pure Religion is This

James 1:27 tells us exactly what pure religion is: "“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”

Being a father to the fatherless

Psalm 68:5 “A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling.” We are defending those who have no one to defend them. In some cases, being a child of theirs.

Visiting orphans and widows

Isaiah 1:17 “Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.”

God is the father of the orphans and widows

Deuteronomy 10:18 “He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the foreigner residing among you, giving them food and clothing.”

God is watching over these orphans and widows and widowers.

Deuteronomy 27:19 ““Cursed is anyone who withholds justice from the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow.” Then all the people shall say, “Amen!”

A home to those who no longer have a home of their own.

Sixty percent of assisted living center residents and nursing home residents never receive any visitors. These precious people have lost their parents and many have lost their spouses, so certainly these people are true orphans and widows. The Mulvane Brethren Church in Mulvane, Kansas ministers to these folks at least 3 times a week, with a Bible study too. Please visit one near you and you will be practicing pure religion (James 1:27).

In some cities there are people who bring their pets in to visit the seniors.

Great job Jack as always. I rarely comment on my friends articles (that is a flaw of mine). I need to do so more often. But I am always blessed when I read the ink of your heart as you have poured it out on the page. For I know that you feel and strongly believe what you write. I often read what you write...and I enjoy it every time.

Greet my Kansas brethren.
Grace my good brother.

It seems unlikely that imperfect beings can experience true perfection. The flaw is in us, of course. So, "Perfect" religion certainly exists, but is a human capable of really experiencing it?
This one got me thinking, Jack. (Happy Spring!)

My sister was an orphan. She ate out of trash cans for food and never got over her plight. She is deceased now. I could not get any information from her. Her emotional pain was too great.

Christ calls his people to go out into the world and to feed and clothe the poor, help those in need and to show compassion. What an awesome God we serve. Great article, we need more articles that remind the world what Christianity is all about. Too many people are bringing a bad name to Christianity thanks for posting truth!!

One of my greatest pleasures in life has been my involvement with the enlisted widows at the Air Force Enlisted Village. I am honored to sit on the board of directors and help take care of over 350 widows.

There are far more elderly and house bound or in residential homes now , the task is endless , but if we do our part , then it alleviates the loneliness that so many feel in their final years . I take care of my pastor's ninety year old mother who suffers with Alzheimer's four days a week .
God bless you in all you do for His people.

I have finally discovered why the majority of people insist on complicating the gospel of Christ, I believe, that while someone might appear to be "serving" the lord by manipulating and complicating THE TRUTH or only true religion which is actually universally shared by many, many other faiths and doctrines is the fact that it can mask ones own greed, lust, bigotry, slothfulness etc peppering it with Biblical quotes and dogma rather than to actually applying the advice contained inside those passages, all of which calling us to become involved with these precious activities which you mention above. Thank you so much.
