Potato Salad at Funerals

What I wouldn't give to be able to spend one more day with my grandmother and uncles.

Nuggets of Faith -- April 2008

There will be potato salad and desserts. There will be hugs and kisses from relatives that have not seen each other in a “month of Sundays”. Kids will be running around getting to play with cousins they haven’t seen in a long time. Unfortunately, I am not traveling to an official family reunion. But, then I guess funerals do have a way of reuniting families. Today I board a plane to Memphis so I can attend a funeral of my fiancés father.
The events of this week that led to his death have caused me to wonder. Why do we wait until someone dies to get back in touch with our families? Fifty years ago, families stayed relatively close to each other. I can remember my aunt and uncle driving in from Odessa to Fort Worth for family get events. We would all gather around in my grandmother’s house.
I still don’t understand how we all fit into that house. A couple years ago, I drove by that old house my grandmother worked so hard to own. Someone else now owns it and they have made some changes that nearly made me cry. And, I was so amazed at how small that house is. I imagine it was barely 600 square feet and yet we would have 20 people crammed in there without even a thought.
I didn’t realize how precious those family gatherings really were. How much I would be willing to give if I could just one more time see my Uncle Billy, Uncle Arlin, Uncle Larry and Uncle Bobby sitting around the dinner table trying to “one up” each other with their tales of wilder days. Even typing that last sentence makes me feel old. How can all 4 of those uncles be gone? Where have all these years gone? And, where are all my cousins I used to chase around my grandmother’s yard. I suppose I could find them. A few phone calls to relatives would get me all their phone numbers.
We could have a family reunion. But, somehow I think I would be fortunate to get 50% of them to show up to a reunion. But, suddenly if someone in the family dies we would be able to get the majority to show up. What is it about funerals that make people suddenly put their lives on hold and head across the country to pay respects? There is something about a funeral that makes us realize our mortality.
And, there’s something about a funeral that should make us all consider where we will spend eternity. You must ask yourself the Good Friday/Easter question. Have you come to the place of confessing your sins and acknowledging Jesus Christ’s sacrifice on the cross? Have you trusted Him for your salvation? Is he now the most important part of your life? Are you a follower of the one called the Christ? If you can answer these in the affirmative, we are going to have a reunion in heaven like you won’t believe. It will be a reunion that will put the potato salad and dessert funeral event to shame. If they were saved, I will get to see my Uncles Billy, Bobby, Arlin and Larry once again. What a day that will be!!!
