November is Prematurity Awareness Month around the world. On Thursday, November 17, 2011, everyone is supposed to wear purple to show their support for Prematurity Awareness Day.

Every year, thousands of babies are born premature, and that number continues to grow.

Every year, babies are born prematurely all around the world. November is set aside to raise awareness of this expanding problem and find solutions to prevent this from happening as often. Thousands of dollars are raised every year around the world that go to the March of Dimes.

Babies are born prematurely more often than a person would think about, and the March of Dimes is constantly available to assist families in any way possible. The March of Dimes has also been responsible for doing extensive research into why this is happening more often today and ways to fix the problem.

Thursday, November 17, 2011, is World Prematurity Day, and the March of Dimes is asking that people spread the word about this major problem happening all over the world. The goal of this day is to help raise awareness of this problem all over the world through social media, advertising, fundraisers, and the list goes on.

The March of Dimes has these facts listed on their web site regarding premature births:

In the United States, one in eight babies is born prematurely.
Worldwide, 13 million babies are born too soon each year.
Every year, more than half a million babies are born too soon in the United States.
Our country’s premature birth rate has risen by 36 percent over the last 25 years.
These facts alone should make everyone jump a little bit and consider being thankful for the children that they were able to have. Those that are expecting babies in the near future should also consider looking into the March of Dimes and knowing what they are able to offer should there be a problem with a premature birth or birth defects.

I have been a member of Phi Beta Lambda, which is the college version of Future Business Leaders of America. FBLA-PBL, Inc. is a major supporter of the March of Dimes. FBLA and PBL chapters participate in activities and fundraisers every year to support and contribute towards the March of Dimes. Please were purple on Thursday, November 17, in support of March of Dimes!
