Notes For A Teenage Girl

I admire and respect the struggles that teens deal with on a daily basis. I wrote this piece when my son's girlfriend was going through a difficult time.

Or, Things I Wish I'd Known

Your worth does not depend upon your desirability.

If you want to cultivate your desirability, go ahead, and have fun with it.

You get to choose your friends. Some questions to ask yourself : Does this person encourage me? Make me laugh? Inspire me? Do they like me when I’m happy, and like me when I’m sad?

Do you have passions? Go find them. Revisiting them over the years will be lovely.

Try asking for what you want and need. Try asking calmly and see how that feels.

Your parents, most likely, will still love you regardless of your choices and mistakes. Sometimes only you know what’s right for you.

Sometimes it feels too scary or risky to deviate from what our parents want for us, and that can be ok, too. Just recognize and acknowledge what you sacrifice by playing it safe. You can always change your mind another day, another year.

You are much, much more beautiful than you know. Just the way you are. Trust me on this one.

Be on the lookout for role models 10 years, 15 years, 20 years older. I’m now 45 and I’m looking up to Kim Gordon, Patti Smith, Yoko Ono (and others!) They remind me that I can stay vibrant and relevant for decades. Who makes you excited about the possibilities that lie ahead in your 20s, in your 30s?

Being physically strong and being physically flexible feel good.

There will always be someone smarter, prettier, funnier, richer, or better at sports than you.

Jealous? Get it out of your system and say so! You may both end up laughing about it, and you won’t have to spend energy trying to hide it.

All that stuff about wear sunscreen and don’t smoke? Yeah, that’s good advice.

This, too, shall pass.

We come alone, leave alone. That means we need to be happy who we are as others can only do so much. Thoughtful share and advice - siva

"others can only do so much"....once we realize this, and place the responsibility of our happiness & well being squarely on ourselves, life becomes much, much more enjoyable. Thank you.
