There are many observances in the United States. One of the least celebrated, but one that typifies the foundation upon which this nation is built is Family Week.

National Family Week

Originating in Canada, National Family Week was established in the United States by Sam Wiley in 1968. The celebration is observed not only in the its founding nation, Canada, but also in the United States, and Great Britain.

National Family Week is celebrated in United States the week of Thanksgiving, (the third week in November). The celebration is designed to build connections and strengthen families through seminars, activities, resource fairs, awards programs etc.

National Family Week has the specific purpose of celebrating the contributions families make in our lives. Organizers distribute resource kits which contain activities and ideas related to an annual theme.

The Alliance for Children and Famlies

The Alliance for Children and Families have promoted observance of the week for over 40 years. Assisted by their member organizations, the Alliance has successfully contributed to the support of all families.

Special emphasis may be given to different types of families in any given year. For example, the 2011 emphasis was given to military families and their unique situations. In 2013 their emphasis is on families telling their story and in 2014 their emphasis is on networking with over 500 organizations that also serve families and children.

Celebration in the United States

Celebration in the United States takes on the form of educational activities. In an attempt to expand awareness of the week, the Alliance conducts various localized activities throughout the year.

The slant in the USA is toward empowering communities, making area leaders and policymakers aware of the state of the family in their respective areas.

During the week of the observance, you will find the Alliance hosting various community events, forums, resource fairs and seminars. They also promote seminars, and awards programs and encourage involvement in community volunteer projects,

Celebration in Great Britain

Great Britain is considered by many Americans as a "stuffy" country. However, their observance of national Family Week seems more family friendly than that in the United States.

The British observance is full of fun activities that involve the parents and children. The UK celebration grows larger each year. They hold friendly competitions, prize drawings, arts and crafts, personalized gifts, dances, workshops and on and on...

The UK emphasis seems to be on becoming aware of the family by having fun with the family.

Celebration in Australia

The Australian observation is of National Families Week has the purpose celebrating "the vital role families play in society and to highlight the importance of giving every child a happy, healthy childhood."

Similar to the observances in the US, Australia has a heavy emphasis on conferences and seminars. They do, however offer some family activities, storytelling, games day and the like. It all still has a rather formal attitude.

Celebration in Canada

In Canada, the birthplace of it all, the observance has more family fun activities. Various locations plan and carry-out parent-child interactive events. In some Canadian locations activities which include grandma's and grandpa's. Canada works hard to make most events suitable for all ages.

The Ultimate Purpose

The ultimate purpose of all these observances in all these countries is to promote healthy, happy families who feel their value as being the foundation of each society.

What will you do with your family during the next National Family Week celebration?
