The psychology of honor killing is a topic that is slowly infiltrating the Western World. Normally, one would think of honor killing as something that is done in the Middle East or Africa somewhere. Now more and more countries such as Germany, UK, USA, and Canada are experiencing this new type of murder.

Female Aggression

Females have been the object of male aggression since time began. However, when we think of murder linked to female oppression, generally speaking, we think of female oppression in the East. Of course this is a mistake because we have plenty of female murders at the hands of men in the West as well.

Honor Killings

What we don’t think of in the West is honor killings. An honor killing is an act of killing a female because she has done something to shame the family. It is brutal and it is wrong.

No one thought honor killings would reach Canada. In 2012 three members of a Montreal family were on trial for the honor killing of three young girls, Geeti, Zainab and Shahar Shafia and their husband’s first wife Rose Mohammad Amir.

The family was coming back from a vacation in Niagara Falls, Ontario when they were pushed into the Kingston Mills Locks. Their brother Hamed, father*/husband, Mohammad Shafia, and second wife Tooba Yahya are presenting standing trial for the murders.

The Shafia family murders

What were the honor crimes? The older sister 19-year-old Zainab Shafia, wanted to marry a Pakistani man. This was forbidden as the family could only marry other Afghanis like themselves. The other two girls were younger, 17 and 13 respectively and they just wanted to be Canadian and dress like Canadian girls. The first wife could not bear children and that is why Tooba Yahya , the second wife, came into the picture. She had Mohammad Shafia’s children. She also abused the first wife and the girls were abused by their father and brother as well.

The girls complained to their school who called in Batshaw Social Services, but after the social worker visited the home the girls recanted their story. Who wouldn’t; these girls were terrified of their fathers. They could not tell their story in front of them.

The investigation was closed and now the girls are gone. The Shafia honor killing trial is a shock to our great nation. We Montrealers and Canadians alike welcome cultural differences but we will never accept or tolerate honor killings.

There is no honour in these so called honour killings...as the real shame of the family lies squarely at the head and the feet of the men who commit the wicked killings .
They will find that out to their regret when they face their Maker . ( whether they believe in Him or not )
Bless you Carol

I think it is shameful these so called 'honor nothing's I think more like dishonor killing. I had not heard about that trial being in the USA. I hope those who killed rot in jail throw away the key. I thought you marry who You love not who your father say who are set a characteristic that they have to marry somebody like that.
