Another home owned by Paddock in Reno, Nevada, is also being searched for clues.

Sheriff Joe Lombardo described Paddock as a "lone wolf", adding: "I can't get into the mind of a psychopath at this point."

Donald Trump has called the gunman who killed 59 concertgoers in Las Vegas a "sick" and "demented" man.

Stephen Paddock is believed to have killed himself after his shooting rampage from the 32nd floor of a Vegas Strip hotel.

Police say the 64-year-old had amassed an arsenal including explosives, 42 guns, and several thousand rounds of ammunition.

Leaving the White House to visit hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico, the President said: "He was a sick man, a demented man. Lot of problems, I guess, and we're looking into him very, very seriously."

When asked about gun control, he added: "We'll be talking about gun laws as time goes by."

Detectives are still grappling to find a motive for the deadliest shooting in modern US history.

More than 500 people were injured after Paddock opened fire on a country music festival - and at least 45 people remain in a critical condition.

The gunman had used at least 10 suitcases to smuggle weapons into his hotel room after checking in on Thursday last week.

Images posted by US media showed automatic weapons attached to tripods lying on the ground in the hotel room, with scores of bullet casings littering the floor around them.

Paddock had smashed two windows in his hotel suite using a hammer shortly after 10pm on Sunday, before aiming bursts of fire at the crowds below him.

The former accountant - a multi-millionaire property investor who liked to gamble - also fired through the door of his room and hit a security guard in the leg.

When a SWAT team stormed the room 72 minutes after the first 911 call was made, Paddock was found dead among the weapons.

Some of the firearms recovered from Paddock's hotel room had scopes, while two were reportedly modified to make them fully automatic.

Carolyn Goodman, mayor of Las Vegas, told Sky News: "I think the first thing you have to talk about is how did these horrible people, whether they're terrorists or just a crazed individual, get a hold of weaponry like this?

"And there are so many illegal pathways to do this. You don't have to go through what all of us would do - get a registered firearm, go through the waiting time."
