We can all whine about the way the world looks today but in reality the world is many times better than years past. Never before have we been this close to world peace, so healthy, so cultured, and so educated and certainly never this happy.

This is a short article highlighting what life was like in past years and how darn lucky we are to be living in the 21st century!

Read on and maybe, this will change your outlook on life.

Summing Up

If we were to go back in time, 30 years, or 50 or a 1000, and told people what it is like on earth today the people would think of the future as heaven.

Tell the people they do no need to work 15 hours 6 days a week.
Tell them that all their children will live past the age of 80.
Tell them the government will support them when they are unemployed.
Tell them polio was irradiated from most of the world.
Tell them their kids can go to school for 12 years for free.
Tell them they will not be burnt at the stake because someone thought they were a witch.
Tell them they can communicate with friends in faraway places for free.
Tell them about democracy.
Tell them wars are fort in unmanned tanks and aircraft.
Tell them slavery has been abolished.
Tell them about UNICEF.
Tell them that racism is deemed wrong.
Tell them women in most countries can vote.
Tell them the world now cares for the environment.
But, mostly tell them how darn lucky you are to be living in the 21st century!

What period would you prefer to be living in ?

200 years ago the world was better, simpler and happier
The 21st Century is for me - Where's my smart phone
I wish I was born after 2100 - Beam me up Scotty

A convincing case with irrefutable points. Thanks also for the detailed statistics, Quescout. We are in the cusp of a better world ever and we can really live in heaven if we go hammer and tong for peace. Few decades ago many in Europe thought they could die in a nuclear holocaust. Now the iron curtain is history and China is taking firm steps towards world stage to play their part as a super power. Now is the time for disarmament to make it all worthwhile - siva

ty for writing this. It puts a light on what we have accomplished in the world as opposed to what we had been doing in our world. Its a better world now for sure. :)

I think I was living somewhere on this earth "200 years ago" when the world was better, simpler and happier.

And I'm here right now in "The 21st Century" and hope to be " born after 2100" also.

Interesting and well presented points. I wonder though if we can apply your arguments to the 'whole 21th century world' and not only to western societies. Thanks for sharing.

@Silvia I think you are so correct, us being on the cusp. China too, with all their power. There are a few wild groups out there but we are much closer to a better world.
@Grunpybear Thanks for your comment. I just thought if I were to highlight some good things about the world, and show it is not doom & gloom people would feel better.
@Rathnashikamani, So many people have answered that the same, a more better, simpler & happier 200 years ago. I suppose it might depend on where you were.
@Mike I do try to keep my articles as worldly as I can. In this case I had difficulty researching areas like India or and parts of Asia. I am going to bet places like New Guinea 200 years ago, before invasion, were very nice indeed.
