This poem was written for my mother when I turned 28, a gift to her for giving me life. The gift I presented her with was a watch she dearly wanted.

Poem to my Mother

It started 28 years ago,
The day that I was born.
You took me in your waiting arms
In the heat of a Tuesday morn.

Each and every year that passed
With patience in your heart
You taught me many valued things
Right from the very start.

You taught me to understand my limitations
When tasks were beyond my scope
To take things as a brand new challenge
You taught me confidence and hope.

You taught me to listen to those who advise
And judge for myself what was right
You kept me in touch of all that was around me
You taught me to settle differences without a fight.

You taught me to delight in simple pleasures
To see a rainbow, not the falling rain
If I would fall, or seem to lose,
You were always there to ease the pain.

You taught me to stick by my convictions
In growing up, it was hard to do
But you were practical as you needed to be
And taught me dreams sometimes do come true.

You taught me to live a life I believed in
To trust my own judgment and maturity
Then I could not just be happy, but successful
And become a worthwhile person I was meant to be.

Mom, through all you’ve taught me and all we shared
I cannot begin to start
To tell you how much you’re loved
And treasured deep within my heart

This gift that I give you is just a token
Of my growing pains, smiles and tears-
But with deep pride and continued devotion,
I thank you for these 28 years.
