Dating online can lead to true love or to true trouble. Here's how to navigate love online and hopefully find "the one" during the process.

Getting Started With Online Dating

Romance can blossom with the click of a mouse. Today, an estimated one in five couples meets online. Here's how to boost your chances for finding the love of your life online.
If you want to learn how to succeed at online dating, you need to become familiar with online sites. Step one is to visit some of the online dating sites and scroll through some profiles. Get familiar with the sites. Then, it's time for step two: writing your profile.

Writing Your Profile

Having a great profile is a key factor if you want to learn how to succeed at online dating. A lot of people stress over this step but don't let it get you down. Keep your profile as simple as possible. There's no need to get too wordy.
Avoid cliches. Who among us doesn't like walking along the beach at sunset? Or holding hands with that special someone while walking under an umbrella on a rain day? Instead, think about what you really like to do and add it to your profile. If you like walking to the local park, just say that. If you play a sport such as tennis, golf or swimming; mention that in your profile. If you're into cooking, knitting or reading; add those hobbies to your profile.

Be Honest

If you want to learn how to succeed at online dating, you have to be honest. Many people who date online mistakenly think they can get away with a little white lie or an exaggeration. Women as well as men often shave a year or two off their age. Men may exaggerate their height and "add" an inch or two. Women are notorious for posting a photo of themselves taken 10 to 20 years ago. Just remember this: the minute you and your date meet in person, he or she will know that you lied about something. Being dishonest even before you meet is not a good way to start a relationship.

Keep it Positive

Your profile is not the place to complain about how your former spouse cheated on you or how bad your boss is. Yes, you do want to be honest but you don't want to come across as a downer. Share the details about your divorce down the road a little.

Don't Be Too Picky

Some people make the mistake of being too picky. For example, a woman might be looking for a man ages 30 to 35, 6 feet tall and athletic. So what if there's a great guy out there who happens to be 5 foot 8, not much of an athlete and 37 years old? You might miss out on the one if you narrow your options too soon.

Don't Give Up Too Soon

Some people think that if they don't meet that special someone in a few weeks or months, then they never will. But it may take a year or more of dating online before you find somebody you click with. I should know. It took me almost a year of dating online before I finally met my husband. If it worked for me, then it can work for you.
