How to Edit your Book of Life

You are your own personal, living, walking, talking and thinking book of life. You need to make a drastic change to it before it is too late.

This is fact

There is something in life that only you can do - and that is to change the theme of your book of life. The consequences of failure to do this are too horrific to even contemplate. When you're through reading this and you neglect to take action, know that there is no other route for you to follow.

First things first

A human body needs only one thing to give it functionality as a living human creature complete with consciousness and individuality. Without this one thing it has no life whatsoever and might as well be buried. That one thing is the Breath of Life which, in actual fact, is an extension of God Himself. God is Spirit and all spirits come from Him, which makes us spiritual beings. We, as human creatures, are like angels clad in physical bodies through which we expose our spiritual personalities.

Every movement made or action taken by our physical bodies is merely the outward expression of our spiritual life within. Our spiritual person is a living being with an inner core known as the heart. At the helm of the heart is a “mechanism” responsible for everything that comes out of the heart for presentation to fellow human beings. This fellow is capable of moving mountains, launching ships, waging war and doing anything it conjures up within the heart. We all know him as the mind of the spirit. He is the executive officer of our spiritual being. Without him nothing will be accomplished either good or bad. The world is what it is today because of the spiritual mind of man.

It was the spiritual mind of Eve that elected to eat of that forbidden fruit. It was the spiritual mind of Cain that devised the death of his brother. Modern technology exists because of the spiritual minds of men. Yes, man possesses the creative qualities of his Maker. As possessors of God-life it is impossible not to be creative. Although imprisoned within puny physical bodies, these spiritual creatures are capable of immense constructive or destructive exploits.

Now here’s the problem. Every individual human spirit-creature comes equipped with a companion to his mind known as the power of choice – or FREE WILL. But it is entirely up to the mind whether or not to take counsel from this thorn in the spirit. The mess the world is in today is as a direct result of opposing the right choice in favour of the wrong one. The fact is, making wrong choices forms part of man’s fallen nature and it is this that has alienated him from his Maker. Partaking of the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil swayed us towards the latter attribute thereof. It became our spiritual poison with eternal consequences.

An open book

Now here’s the thing – having this God-life within his physical body, man is utterly exposed to the Great Spirit, which is God. It means that the spirit of every human being is like a cam-recorder within the “mother spirit”, which is God, the Creator Spirit. Not even the tiniest movement we make goes unnoticed. Every single thought going through our minds, every word spoken and every action taken are displayed and heard by God every moment of our lives. We can hide nothing from the Source of our lives. We are, in fact, a book of life being written by ourselves for constant consumption by the One who put ink in our spiritual pens for this purpose.

Every person will have the opportunity to review his own book of life as depicted in Rev 20:12, 13. “And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened...and they were judged every man...”
These books (of life) are ours and God already knows the content from cover to cover. However, only those who have not made a willing change to their book of life – while they were still alive and well and living on Earth - will stand in this Judgment. You most certainly don’t want to be in this Judgment.

And God has His own book which will either reflect or not reflect our names written therein, “...and another book was opened, which is the book of life...And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.”

It is emphatically clear that there is nothing we can hide or keep secret from the first page to the last page of our personal book of life. However, if we get to know the Truth and embrace it, we can complete the last pages of our book (from the moment we follow that Truth) with scintillating chapters that fills the heart of God with joy and contentment. Here’s the good part. God will discard every page prior to that and exclude you from the moment of Judgment reserved for all those who have not altered the theme of their book.

How has your book been coming along or are you still sleeping between the soft covers provided by the world you live in? Is it not time to start writing a God-pleasing best seller for all to see? Don’t despair. You are about to receive the guidelines for starting such a book. Please switch over to alert mode.

Press the pause button to your book of life

If the key to the Judgment that leads to the lake of fire is the unaltered content of your book of life, then it makes simple sense to make the necessary change to your book of life in order to avoid that Judgment.

Make no mistake - making a change is an absolute prerequisite for avoiding that Judgement. In fact, it is of such vital importance that you can safely consider it to be the sole purpose of your existence. If you don’t make that change, then your life will have been meaningless and the praises heaped upon your character at your funeral service will as empty of truth as your body is of life.

If you have not as yet made the change to your book of life, then you are in for a very pleasant surprise. You see, you have already been judged and all you have to do is give acknowledgement to it, which then constitutes the necessary change to your book of life. It’s as easy as that. Puzzled?

If you are broke, unemployed and destitute and someone deposits a large sum of money into your empty bank account without informing you, then your predicament will continue until you find out about the money that you suddenly have acquired. Conversely, if that someone does, in fact, notify you of the deposit, but you choose to ignore it for whatever reason, then your woes will not come to an end unless you decide to make use of your windfall.

It is very likely that you have already been informed of the finished judgment upon your life but you have chosen to ignore it as an act of that free will mentioned earlier. In your favour, let’s just say that the reason you paid no attention to it is because the significance of it did not strike home. Well, here’s your chance to reconsider.

Your reaction to what you are about to read will either bring about that change to your book of life or it will catapult you headlong into the inevitable. Bear in mind that one’s book of life has no planned ending and neither does one have the power to add pages to it once it has ended. When it ends, it ends.

Your life was judged when Jesus Christ – God in the flesh – hung on the Cross as your substitute, taking your judgment upon Him so that you may be free of the Judgment that would send you to hell. After having paid the price for your condition of sin, He rose from the dead so that you may also live again to restart your book of life, having had the consequences of all the previous chapters of your book of life erased. How does that grab you?

Want proof? Speaking of the event of the Cross shortly before His crucifixion, Jesus said, “Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out. And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me. This he said, signifying what death he should die.” (John 12:3-33)

What did this mean? It meant that your judgment ("judgment of this world”) was about to take place. It meant that the power of the devil (“the prince of this world”) and the sin he instituted was about to be broken. It meant that, as a spirit-creature emanating from and existing within the Spirit of God, you would automatically be included (“will draw all men unto me”) in the Body of Christ on that Cross for judgment. The only difference is that Jesus Christ was to take all of the punishment and pay the penalty on your behalf so that you may never be judged again.

Now this is where your free will enters the picture. God will never impose His will upon your life or force your will to suit Him. The Cross was the provision made for your deliverance and although your real life (your spirit-life) has its existence within the Spirit of God and, therefore, by “default” you actually had to be included on the Cross, the mind of your spirit has the final say in the matter. This is where you decide which way to go. Is it to be your acknowledgement now of the Judgment by way of the Cross and the only entrance to the Kingdom of God or is it to be Judgment later and the hell it offers for eternity? You don’t want to be in the latter Judgment.

Is this a catch 22 situation for you? If your heart is not in it but you decide to acknowledge it just for the sake of escaping hell, then it won’t work, for God knows your heart. On the other hand, if you are truly convicted and you recognize the call of your Heavenly Father and you want to be reconciled to Him, then your heart will reveal it to God and He will receive you. Whichever way you look at it, Jesus Christ saved you from the Judgment of God. That little component of your spiritual make-up, your free will, has to go one way or the other.

You see, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.” (John 3:16-18)

God created everything by His Word and it was manifested. In the same way you can manifest your Salvation by the word of your mouth. “But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” (Rom 10:8-10)

God created you for His pleasure and to have fellowship with Him. You lost this birthright in the fall. But now it is restored to you. You are born again through Christ. “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” (John 14:6)

You may want to say this prayer.
"Dear Heavenly Father, I confess that I am a sinner. I repent and turn away from my past life. Please forgive me. I believe that your son, Jesus Christ died for my sins, was resurrected from the dead, is alive, and hears my prayer. I invite Jesus to become the Lord of my life, to rule and reign in my heart from this day forward. Please send your Holy Spirit to help me in my future walk with You and to do Your will for the rest of my life. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen."

If you have said that prayer, then you are born again and your book of life starts a brand new page. From now on you will have the help of the Master Editor, the Holy Spirit, to guide the mind of your spirit in compiling further pages. You can be assured, you are going to make some mistakes, but unlike the former pages of your book of life, you will be able to render those mistakes of no consequence by confessing them to the Father and asking for forgiveness. "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." (1John 1:9)

That old man

The new “entries” in your book of life are going to have some serious opposition from the former pages of your book of life. These former pages are known as your “old man”. Basically, they are the recorded memories of the activities of and the blueprint for your former life. They were not erased. If they were, you would now be suffering from amnesia and your new life would not have any meaning, for how would one distinguish the one from the other if one’s soul is emptied of all its content? In other words, there would be no consciousness of a past sinful life and, therefore, no need of a new re-born life.

So, your mind is going to have to take control of the situation and assert itself when the old man comes visiting. Paul has this to say about that old man lurking in the wings, “That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.” (Eph 4:22-24)

And also, “Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:” (Col 3:9,10)

Yes, that old man of the flesh will be persistent, trying his luck until he finally fades away in the distant past. It is going to be a matter of constantly renewing your mind to the fact that there is a new boy on the block and he is the one who will be in charge of the book of life. “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” (Rom 12:2)

Transformation is the process of diminishing the influence of the former old man of the flesh and finally eliminating him from the scene forever so that in future your book of life no longer needs to look over its shoulder.

You’ve made the necessary change to your book of life and there is no doubt that all the other “books of life” within your family circle and those of friends will question your new style of “writing” unless, of course, they have also made a change. It is expected of you relay the good news to all who are in need of a change. You will find that it comes (super) naturally, for you now possess an inborn zeal for the things of God and will want to join a Bible-based church for fellowship and teaching.

The Kingdom within you

When you were born again, that is, when the change to your book of life took effect, you also severed your allegiance to the kingdom that held you captive. You did not need to lift a finger to accomplish this. It was an automatic transfer, forming part of your privileges as a new subject or citizen of the Kingdom of God. "Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:" (Col 1:12-14)

You might not be able to see that Kingdom, but you are living and moving in it as a son under the reign and protection of its King, Jesus Christ. It is for this reason that you have begun to feel alien to this world. You are in this world but no longer of this world.

You are here as an ambassador for the Kingdom of God and your mission is to influence the lives of those still needing to make a change to their book of life. When your mission is accomplished, you will be recalled. "And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you." (Luke 17:20,21)

While you are in this world all your needs will be met by God using the resources of this world. Your secular employer does not know it, but he has become God’s treasurer just for you. Therefore, a sudden promotion or salary increase for you will not be out of the question at all. The entire Universe and everything in it belongs to God. "For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills." (Ps 50:10) That’s a lot of cattle considering that every inch of earth is a hill above the sea. And God can convert them to cash or other goods in a blink of an eye.

While still in this world you are going to face persecution from others – even your own family – but God has equipped you with spiritual weapons to overcome your adversaries. Your strongest weapon is the Name of Jesus and you may use this Name against the most powerful of enemies. "Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." (Philippians 2:9-11)

Your main battle will be against the spiritual forces of darkness, but they are no match for the Name that has already overcome them. "And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover." (Mark 16:17.18)

The greatest step you could ever have taken was to make that change to your book of life. Your next step is to join a church group so that you can grow in your walk in the Faith of Jesus Christ. "I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me." (Gal 2:20)
