November is the month of mourning and grieving according to the Christian traditions. Most of the Christians commemorate their demised relatives and friends, visit cemeteries and pray for them. Etiquette of grief is an art expressed in many aesthetic ways.

Etiquette of grief is an art

Grief is an emotion. It is expressed in many ways. It is a personal experience. It cannot be measured or controlled or fixed into some formal rituals. A bereaved person becomes helpless and depressed. Those who watch the bereaved persons also become powerless and stand helpless at the loss. Only time can heal such wounds in the grieving heart.

November the month of mourning and grieving

November, according to the Christian traditions, is the month of commemorating the departed souls. All Saints Day and All Souls Day are meant for this. Throughout the month they do many prayers and charities commemorating their departed relatives and friends. They visit cemeteries, decorate their tombs with flowers and share the feelings of intimacy with them. Keeping the last resting places of these beloved ones beautiful is really an art. By visiting cemeteries and memorial places one can enjoy this art of grief.

My recent visit to an exhibition of mourning art

I had a privilege of visiting an exhibition on Victorian mourning customs displayed at
Hower House in Akron, USA. It was a display of traditional Victorian era mourning items, exhibited along with information on customs of those times.

The display explained the traditional customs such as the mourning procession behind the casket, with black armbands and black buntings. There were pictures showing flags at half mast as we see today. In fact taking pictures of such mass death was dreaded in those times. There were also pictures exhibiting jewelry and ornaments from locks of hair, worn by the dead loved. Pictures showed women were inspired by Queen Victoria of England and followed the ways she had shown at the death of her husband who died of typhoid fever.

The pictures also revealed that they had mourning for a certain period, wearing a particular code of jewelry and black dress with specific mourning pins. There were special industries for mourning clothing and jewelry for those who had suffered a loss in their family.

Grieving is an art and therapy

Although death and dying are scary and uncomfortable subjects, they are inevitable part of human life. Grief is a long process of emotion which is shared by others as a part of human communication and social activities.

When grieving becomes an art it takes a new avatar as a healing therapy. It becomes a soul-satisfying emotional release with a creative process. Grieving art is used to express human despair, find meaning in life, and transcend human emotional struggles. A tragic loss can also become therapeutic, when it is expressed in art and etiquette. They help the sufferer and others to express and release their own painful and stressful emotions.
