Golden Rules for Parenting

Parenting is not easy, but it can be an enjoyable experience. Parenting can turn out be a great journey for you and your child if you are loving, patient, kind, caring and considerate.

Listen before you speak

Listening is an art, an art cultivated over the years with practice. Do not start talking before listening to what your child has to say.

Listen to what your child says and understand what has actually happened and then guide your child in the best possible way. Do not be in a hurry and blurt out harsh words that can scar your child for life. Do not advice before understanding the whole situation.

Make your child feel comfortable and confident. Show that you will be there to help your child out of difficult situations so that your child will come to you when there is a problem.

Listen before you speak is one golden rule we as parents should follow.

Don’t Jump to Conclusions

Don.t jump to conclusions before knowing all the facts. Ask what has happened and process all that has happened to your child in your mind before speaking. If your child has come up with a problem in school address that problem immediately.

Take the right measures. Do not do anything that may adversely affect your child. Deal with the situation in a discrete manner. If needed go to school and talk with the teachers and let them know about the problem so that they can be supportive in school. Make sure that your child is not being bullied.

If you are judgemental and harsh, your child will not be frank with you about what is going on and you will be in the dark searching for solutions that will be tough to find. Give the confidence to your child that you will always help them out of difficult situations and always be there for them.

Do not compare

Each child is unique, God’s own creation. Do not compare them with other children. Comparing will lead to low-self esteem and your child may lose self-confidence. When you start comparing your child with other children, your child will feel worthless.

If you make it a habit of regularly comparing then you will only end up scarring your child for life. Do not talk about your child’s weaknesses in front of others.

Spend Quality Time

Spend quality time with your child. Even if you have busy schedule take some time off to be with your child. Go for a picnic, camping or do any activity that your child loves. Do not miss out on the wonderful moments of parenting.

Bond with your child in the best possible way. Create memories, happy memories for your child to remember and recollect and memories for you to treasure throughout your life.

Be Supportive

Support your child in whatever your child wants to do. Do not live your dreams through your child. If you want your child to be a doctor, do not force it upon your child.

As parents, we have to support our children in whatever they want to do. We have to encourage and appreciate them. Do not put them down and make them feel bad about themselves. Above all, bring them up to be kind, considerate and good human beings who will make this world a better place.

The last golden rule is to find ways that will help your child be happy, confident and face any situation head on and enjoy the whole experience of growing up.

Thanks Vellur, these are invaluable tips especially for the younger generation.

My son was born a long time after my marriage. I immediately changed my work priorities to spend as much time as possible with him. My wife too was at home all the time to give motherly love. Work became only a means to an end - to meet my needs.

I feel sad when I see young couples preoccupied with gadgets and even providing their toddlers with many.

Gadgets cannot provide love that is the hallmark of all species. Children should get support and parents should give their time - the interaction should be no-holds-barred; take the cue from Mother Nature - siva

Fern Mc Costigan thank you.

Siva it is very sad to see how gadgets have taken over the lives of parents and children and yes there should be parental guidance and support for children in every step of their lives.
