Giving to Others is Giving to Yourself

Volunteer work gives one immense satisfaction and gives back to the community.

Community service is one of the requirements necessary by most colleges in Kenya before someone can graduate and a friend of mine introduced me to happy life children home, a home for abandoned babies and that is when this amazing journey began.

Abandoned Babies

Hospitals call the home if there is a baby abandoned in their care by a mother who just walks away from the hospital after delivering the baby and does not come back.

Some children are found abandoned on the street some even put in plastic paper bags and after medical care is given to the child who is saved by a Good Samaritan and the case reported to the police then the baby is taken to happy life and this is where their life begins.

The home has employed some mature women who provide the everyday care like bathing, feeding and generally taking care of babies and that is where the volunteers are needed to hold the babies and assist around the home.

Love Heals

What has never failed to fascinate me is how the babies are receptive to just being held and given some attention and are able to remember the familiar faces irrespective of the many people who come to their home.

Six Months

Once the babies are six months old, they are ready to be adopted and the parents to be are screened thoroughly to ensure that they are able to provide the best care possible for the child. Irrespective of what most people think you don’t need to be rich to adopt a baby and all that is needed is for the person or persons adopting to be of sound mind and making a decent living with no criminal record.

I have met many people at the home who have come from different countries with the desire to do community service and many have left a mark on my heart at how loving they can be to those children and some come back and reside in the country for a while so that they can be able to adopt a baby and then go back to their home.

One particular lady Susan will always hold a special place in my heart, she came and wanted to adopt a child and the one that she bonded with could not hear so she made arrangements for the child to get hearing aid and paid for speech therapy. When I saw the child that she adopted two years ago, the transformation is amazing and now her daughter can hear and speak and has been loved into becoming a princess.

I have come to realize that when you give to the less fortunate, you actually give to yourself. Every time I visit to volunteer with the home I leave more fulfilled than anything else does for me and the journey that I began in the year 2004 has defined the person that I have now become and every time I get some free time I go to Happy life children home which has now become my second home.

I am introverted and enjoy spending time in quite places and thus I have adopted reading as a second nature and I have just now began to write and I love to cook.
