Use lots of finger plays on a daily basis to increase children's language developmental skills. Allow them the freedom to learn how to communicate with finger plays, finger poems, finger action songs and movements. Help them to improve eye-hand coordination
and other reading readiness and reading skills! Also great for those active learners and children who seem to need a little extra movement in their experiences!

Can Your Fingers Really Walk?

Fingerplays and finger rhymes are really great for young children for many reasons. I know you are wondering, "Can fingers really walk?" Yes they can! They walk by use of the fingers to the creative and rhythmic beat of words, sounds, rhymes, chants and songs! These finger movements are great for helping children to develop eye-hand coordination. it is quite some rhythmic work to get those hands, fingers, arms and other body parts moving together or in opposite directions.

Fingerplays Can Bring Fun!

Some fingerplays are just fun and can be added tto additional llearning concepts such as food, colors, shapes, etc.

Six brown peas in the pot (Hold hand in a fist)
One boiled, two boiled until hot. ( Put fingers int he pot, one at a time)
They boiled and boiled
( Put hand in the air very slowly)
And they did not stop.
Until one day the pot went pop, POP! ( The children clapped their hands together)

Here is an old fingerplay that we liked to play for many years as children!

One Potato, Two Potatoes, Three

One potato, two potatoes
three potatoes, four.
Five potatoes six potatoes
Seven potatoes more!
(Have children put one fist on top of the other, alternating until all fists have made it to the top for number seven!
