Can't decide whether or not to set up a Facebook page for yourself? Check out the pros and cons.

Biggest Craze in Social Networking

Facebook's popularity and membership roster far exceed that of the other social networking sites out there today. Can't decide whether or not you want to go through the hassle of setting up a Facebook page? Let me help you weigh the pros and the cons!

Disadvantages

To me, the advantages of using Facebook ("FB") far outnumber the disadvantages, but for most people the main reason they don't set up a FB page is because they don't want everyone to know their business. Whether they realize it or not, it is possible to have a FB page and not tell everybody your business.

FB is VERY addictive. Once you get started and get acclimated to the way it works, FB is the first thing you want to do when you wake up and the last thing you do before you go to bed - if you can pry yourself away from the computer. Since I downloaded the FB app on my blackberry, I don't seem to spend as much time on my computer as I used to.

As with any computer use, you are very susceptible to viruses. There is always a new virus floating around in the form of a video from a friend. Most of the time if you use a little common sense, you are able to ward off these little bugars.

Stalking can take place on FB if you aren't carefully monitoring your friends and your page. Make sure you only accept friend requests from people you actually know. Your personal information is readily available to anyone who can view your page, so watch out for potential predators.

FB isn't for everyone, but read over all the advantages to using FB before you make a decision. You won't regret it!

Advantages

The very first advantage to FB that I discovered right off the bat was connecting or reconnecting with old friends, family members, co-workers and neighbors - just to name a few. FB has tools that help you find people you know from high school, college, church, work and other networks.

I talk to more people now on a daily basis via FB than I ever did in every day life. Sad, I know, but for some reason, FB opens up doors and windows that just aren't possible in reality. Now I am able to communicate with family members in other states that I didn't communicate with before FB. It's so easy to post something on a relative's wall when you are multi-asking and can't pick up the phone.

Privacy and security are easily accesible on FB. Privacy settings are easy to use and allow you to select which friends see what content at any given time. Privacy settings can be changed at any time. Another means of privacy on FB is the private message. You can communicate with one or more people at the same time by private message and noone else will even know you are talking.

To a lot of people, it's so much easier to communicate with others via computer these days. It's much less awkward and allows you to get to know the other person and feel more comfortable before you meet. FB has become a revolutionary way to meet people for dating.

Other fun and entertaining aspects of FB are the ever-growing fan and group pages. These pages are a great way to meet up with other people who share the same interests as you. I have seen pages for everything from sports teams to coupon savers. The range of variety is expansive. Many people use these pages as a means of marketing their products and making money.

Events are one of the popular features of FB that I myself have used. Events are used to set up just that, an event. You can specify the date, time and location of the event and send out invitations to people you would like to attend. Each person receives an invitation on their FB page. The event automatically tallies who will attend the event and who will not, giving you an accurate headcount. There is also a wall on the event page where all the invitees can discuss the upcoming event.

These are just a few of the advantages of using FB. I hope I was able to help you make an informed decision. Happy Facebooking!

Thanks, Melissa D. Ing. Fortunately for me, I don't add anybody I don't know, so that helps cut down on the crazies. :)

I love facebook. Do like the idea having to connect with my family through it, because have of them live in Minnesota and have gotten to see my great nephew through pictures which was great. I enjoy reading your article. Thank you.

Thanks, Clarence. You're welcome. I see more of my family now (thanks to facebook) than I ever did before Facebook.
