A while back people thought that any physical exercise could hurt the baby or cause the mother to miscarry. However, today, they have found that exercise and other activities once thought harmful are indeed not, and in some cases are actually beneficial.

Are hot tubs and saunas safe during pregnancy?

There are many studies that suggest that body temperature of 102 degrees or higher can be harmful to the fetus during the first four weeks of pregnancy. However, many women still enjoy hot tubs and saunas, just not for extended periods of time. The problem is that too high of heat can cause problems with the neural tubes, which affect the brain and spinal cord.

Another thing to keep in mind is that besides steering clear of hot tubs and saunas, it is good avoid exercising strenuously on hot days. Also, if you get sick and you are running a fever over 100 degrees it is important to talk to your OB. So, unless you regularly spend time in really high heat, you probably do not have to worry too much.

Is dental work safe during pregnancy?

Good oral hygiene is extremely important during pregnancy, and it is recommended that if your annual 6 month appoint falls during your pregnancy that you keep it. Generally, dental work is safe during pregnancy, however, it is recommended that should you need x-rays or heavy anesthesia that you wait until after you have delivered as it can be harmful to the fetus. Your dentist will know what is best for you, so just make sure that they know you are pregnant before you have any work done.

Is aspartame safe during pregnancy?

Aspartame is a synthetic sugar, many people call it NutraSweet. It has been found that unless you have PKU that it will not pose any threat during pregnancy. If you are at all worried, it is a good idea to simply choose a different kind of sweetener.

The truth is there is still not enough research to conclude one way or the other, however, chances are it is less likely to cause a problem then any other normal behavior. Just to be on the safe side, you might want to avoid using electric blankets while pregnant.

There are some increased risks during pregnancy, however, at least during your first two trimesters, exercise and the foods you typically eat are not going to be a problem. So, unless something poses a risk to your health typically, then it should not be a problem when you are pregnant. If you have any questions or concerns it is always ok to talk to your doctor. Your doctor should advise you on any concerns for your pregnancy, including things like not eating fish if there are higher levels of radon, etc. at this time
