Living in one of the bigger metropolises can be fabulous but can rob you of the luxury of space and extra money: discover tricks for tackling the struggle.

Decorating small spaces

If you’ve just moved into that chic and trendy loft, or if you’re straight out of college and living in that tiny studio apartment in NYC, you may be feeling cramped for space and short on cash. The first piece of advice is to breathe and start planning. Small spaces are manageable, you just need to have a plan before diving into the designing and decorating. Here are some tips for your interior design challenge:

Don’t miss a corner: consider every space, corner and counter of your apartment, it is precious space and it is not to be wasted. For example, don’t shirk the corners, this could be a great place to put a piece of furniture like your desk. An angled desk nestled in the corner takes care of your “study” and doesn’t rob you of much room.

Multi-functioning furniture: If you’re going to invest in something for the home, make sure you get as much bang for your buck as possible, like getting some dual purpose furniture. Maybe your corner desk can double as a place for you to sit and eat if it’s just you at home. Or use a small bookcase as a side table.

Suspension is key: Don’t bother buying a big, expensive TV stand: suspend your flat screen, entertainment or music system and free up all that room underneath. It will leave you extra space to put something else, or you can just leave it free, making the home just seem less cluttered all together.

Go DIY: Whatever you can managed to buy and put together on your own, do it, even those projects you think were meant for a contractor may be done by you. It could be a nightstand or a bookcase or even stairs. If you’ve been blessed with a second floor to your apartment or a loft setup, you may want to look into DIY stairs. Many providers now have kit options where everything comes together and just needs to be assembled. Call a friend over on a Saturday afternoon to get the job done, it will save you time and money.

Take the stress out of decorating a small space and put the fun back in it. Get your home dimensions and plan out carefully the setup to maximize your space in the best way!

Space is as important as having enough furniture to rest and to work that is why I always say that the fewer things one has the better. I actually wouldn't neglect going round in the streets in search for something that with a coat of paint and a fix could be useful for us. Most people discard things that can be given a new life. Thus, I found a lovely kitchen table that was almost new and fits perfectly in my kitchen.
