During my visit to USA last week we went to a Bridal Shower. It was a most beautiful setting to enjoy a wonderful day. Read on to find out more

Becky and Nate's Bridal Shower

When I visit my American family in Greensboro I always find their way of living so interesting, because it's unlike ours. Each country has its own culture to be savoured and enjoyed. So when I heard we were attending a BRIDAL SHOWER I was intrigued, because in England we don't have them. I wondered if it was a sort of Engagement party, but apparently that had been earlier.

We received a very beautiful card inviting us, with a delicate cream ribbon round it, and I noticed it said we could enjoy luncheon by the lake, and apparently we could bring swimming costumes too. It was being held by Nate's family at their lakeside home, and I was very excited , it was sounding absolutely lovely, the only doubt on the proceeding was the weather, as the previous day we had suffered a tropical storm, with promises of more on the way.

Nate is marrying my eldest grand daughter Becky at Christmas, we will be returning to Greensboro for the wedding, so this year we will have have been lucky enough to make 2 trips. I find it hard to believe that Becky is now 23 years old, I can still remember the first time I saw her as a very young baby, and it only seems a few years ago. How time does indeed fly!

We travelled by car

We were taken by car, it was about a 2 hour drive, in England you could go a long way in 2 hours, but of course America is so vast. Some people there think nothing of travelling about 60 miles to work every day.

For that day at least, the storms had gone, it was sunny and bright and very warm, so we hastily put on our sun screen. When we turned off the road, which had arrows and balloons directing us to the venue, which was very helpful, as it was tucked away.

We were greeted at the door by Nate's parents David and Pam, it was so nice to meet them for the first time. Becky and Nate also greeted us, and Becky had several of her college friends there. I found out later that all the young people were staying the night, such is the warmth and hospitality of the Hassan family, and I am sure they must have all had a great time.

Their house is beautiful and set in a quiet and idyllic location away from the madding crowd. We were served cocktails on the balcony, and sitting at a table overlooking the stunning lakeside, views, I felt I was in another world, and was determined to make the most of it.

Everybody gathered out there, it was such a friendly crowd of people, and we also met Nate's brother, also called David. We could see that down below was a boathouse, and jet skis, with the sun shimmering on the lake, it all looked very inviting.

Becky opened the Gifts

We watched whilst Becky opened their wedding gifts. Nate was right there with her. She had luckily made a wedding list, otherwise I wouldn't have had a clue what to buy, money is so impersonal, but I had been to the shop and managed to find find a pyrex set, that we felt would serve them well.

There was a variety of different gifts, some were amusing but meaningful from friends, and some were practical, but they showed their appreciation of every single one. Her sisters had made a special photo album of precious moments in Becky's life, with pictures of her with family and friends, and I found that myself and her other Grandma were in there too, no-one was forgotten. How thoughtful that was!

Then Pam and David brought in the luncheon. They had prepared some delicious food and we all enjoyed it very much. They also served wine and chilled lemon tea , which is particularly enjoyable during the very hot weather, as it is thirst quenching and refreshing.

Then it was time for more fun!

After we had all eaten, we sat for a while, then Pam invited us all to enjoy the water. I went down to see how[b[/b] cold it was, all the younger girls were already in the water, some were floating on lilos, and the two young boys had braved the coldness to have a swim.

After dabbling my toe in I decided it was no worse than the sea at Herne Bay in early summer, so I took the plunge and went in. I am so glad I did, because I thoroughly enjoyed it. We all had such fun, and after a while it didn't even seem cold.

But there was even more to come. The youngsters were also taking it in turns to go on a jet ski. They all seemed very skilled at it, but for me it was a step too far, I didn't think I could cope with something as fast as that, I could imagine myself falling off in an ungainly heap in the water, so I had to admire Keith when he decide to have a turn .

If I hadn't been so startled at seeing him on a jet ski for the first time in his life, I might have remembered to take a picture. He was gone over the other side of the lake before I knew it, and I have to say I was relieved when he returned all in one piece. For him it was the fulfillment of something he has always wanted to do, and I am so pleased for him that he got his wish.

Then came the boat trip.

David Junior showed his skill in boats, he took one of the younger boys on a jet ski, and also later in the afternoon, we all went out on the family boat.
How lovely it was to be sipping a glass of wine whilst enjoying a cruise round the bay . We were towing Grant, a young boy in a dinghy behind, and he was enjoying himself playing daring tricks by not holding on when the waves came, safe in the knowledge that if he did fall out, he would be ok as he was wearing a life jacket.

It had to happen in the end, and it did, but it had provided us with a lot of amusement. Not to be outdone, our Becky offered to join him this time, and they spent the rest of the journey back on this dinghy ducking and diving the waves, and both managed to stay afloat this time.22

When the boat journey was over, we went back to the house and all too soon, it was time to go home. Thank you so much to Pam and David for your wonderful hospitality, we had an amazing day, and we look forward to meeting up with you all in December at the wedding.

Congratulations to Becky and Nate, and our very best wished for your future happiness.
love from Nannie and Keith xx
