Do you realise how important your job as a parent or educator is?

Back to School

The long summer holidays are nearly over, and I have to admit to feeling relief that it in just a few days my children go back to school. It's been wonderful having them here for this prolonged time, and we have all enjoyed the change in routine. It has been great not to chase the clock, to see different things and to have lazy days on the beach.

Yet, amongst all this busy-ness, I have also missed having some time for myself, just to get under the shower without a head appearing round the bathroom door, or to start a job without being interrupted by squabbles or cries of, 'Mum, I'm bored'.

Am I the only mother who will give a cheer next week, after dropping the kids at school? Is it selfish of me to want some time to myself?

As I reflect on the approaching change in our routine, I am also forced to consider the changes happening in my children. I know that time flies by, it doesn't seem that long ago since they were toddlers. I suspect their teenage years will arrive more quickly than I can imagine, and they won't want to spend time with me, and I will run them to places and drop them off while they spend time with their friends.

Maybe, if I am honest with myself, I have to admit that there are times when I envy the women who take their kids to day care and then rush off to corporate jobs and a day of meetings, uninterrupted coffee breaks and lunchtimes. Yet what about their kids? Who is teaching them the morals that will underpin our future society?

With this in mind, I wonder whether it is such a great sacrifice to spend this quality time with my children now? I love that I can educate them with the social and community concepts that are important to me. I like having the chance to chat with them, talk about values and how to live an honest life. Who else is going to teach them about morals? Who else is taking responsibility to talk about courage, kindness or forgiveness?.

With this reflection, I see that I am playing a critical role in our family and in society. Maybe it is one that is seriously underrated (and not even paid!!). Yet, I and all parents, are doing one of the most important jobs on the planet. We are raising the citizens of the future.

Put like this, I can really see the value of the work I do as a mother. I can appreciate that the time I spend with my kids will help them move with more ease into their future roles as adults.

I am reminded of what Buddah says, 'Watering the flowers and the trees, whispering to them, talking to them. Then, they will grow to be more bright and luxuriant'. Every time we give children quality attention we are helping them grow and thrive. Anyone who takes the time to educate our children is playing such an important role in their lives. Let's not forget it
