April 13, 2014 Palm Sunday
After Ash Wednesday, the next day of celebration during the Season of Lent is Palm Sunday, which falls on April 13th this year. Palm Sunday is the day all Christians celebrates our Lord and Savior’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem the week before His crucifixion and resurrection. In many Christian denominations, Palm Sunday is known as Passion Sunday, and marks the beginning of Holy Week, which ends on Easter Sunday.

Why do most Christian Denomination Refer to Palm Sunday as Palm Sunday?

Palm Sunday got its name from the way Jesus made His triumphant entry into Jerusalem. The people lined the sides of the road some waving Palm branches while covering the road ahead of the donkey Jesus rode on with Palm branches and with their cloaks. The act of their throwing their cloaks in the path of Jesus was a sign of their submission to Him, a sign that they recognized Jesus as being the promise Messiah. It was the 14th day of the Passover month and the large Passover crowds greeted Jesus, the perfect Passover sacrificial Lamb with shouts of “Hosanna to the son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest” (Matthew 21:9 KJV). The people's cries of 'Hosanna' came from Psalm 118:25-26. Hosanna means "save now." Despite what Jesus had already said about his mission on earth, that He had come to die on the cross for their sins, the people were still looking for warrior to lead them to victory over the Romans. Jesus entering Jerusalem riding on the back of a young donkey fulfilled the Old Testament prophecy found in Zechariah 9:9 KJV, which reads: Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.

Galilean Disciples Spreading the News

By the time the sounds of Jesus triumphant entry into Jerusalem reached the city, the Galilean disciples who had witnessed Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead was already spreading the good of that miracle. All this commotion in the city alarmed the Pharisees who feared the Romans, so they approached Jesus and said, “Master, rebuke thy disciples.” Jesus told them, “I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out” (Luke 19:39-40 KJV).

It's amazing how quickly the tide turned. One day the crowds were welcoming Jesus, and then they turned against him. Thanks for sharing, Jerry. I always wondered what hosanna meant.

Good morning Connie. Thanks for dropping by to read and comment. Fear is a powerful persuader, Connie, if one doesn't feel secure in their faith in Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior and those people had little or no faith in the Lord at that time. Even the apostle Peter, one of Jesus' staunchest followers denied him three times out of fear for his own safety.
