Adjusting to Apartment Living

Until now I had only lived in one other apartment, a two bedroom with my mother. Now I live in a one bedroom with my youngest child and it has taken some getting used to; I am still getting used to it.

Lifestyle Changes

I no longer have to assume responsibility for the grass cutting. It is part of the regular upkeep. I am responsible for the flowers that I inherited which I will be digging up as soon as I get the motivation and a trash bag large enough to put them in.

I am responsible for keeping my porch and my plants presentable. I keep them off of the porch to prevent it from being cluttered up. My child's bicycle is on the porch, (it should be inside) but I will be clearing out the bottom of the storage unit for it as the cold weather approaches.

We have close neighbors so I can no longer turn music all the way up. This is probably one of the reasons I have not yet replace the stereo that we left behind. The bedroom is right next to the neighbor's bedroom so we work on not making excessive noise in there, especially at night.

I'm learning how to put things up so that they are out of the way but still easily accessible when we need or want them. I don't have a water bill, and I no longer have a well so I do not worry about leaks I simply tell maintenance. I do not have to worry about repair costs, as long as there is nothing but normal wear and tear and we leave the place clean when we move I'll get the security deposit back.

The rent is income based, which means that is easily within my budget. Even if it was not it is still the bill that gets paid first each and every month. The light bill is the next thing to be paid, because it has to be paid.

Rules and Regulations
Moving in required signing an agreement with a list of rules and regulations. There is a curfew; ten at night for everyone to be entering an apartment or leaving the premises.

We cannot have dishwashers, or washing machines because they pay the water bill. I believe that I'd use less water with a dishwasher because I wouldn't have to wash the dishes as often, and could wait until it fills up. I'm not sure about having a washing machine, but it would reduce my laundry budget drastically.

Keeping to Ourselves

When we first moved in we would socialize with our neighbors. I learned rather quickly that making a habit of this was a bad idea. It did not take long to realize that there were gossips that enjoyed starting trouble.

I have decided that we only speak in passing to our neighbors. We have had enough drama so we avoid others as much as possible to prevent them from creating stories that someone might believe and cause problems with by elaborating and fabricating facts.

We will be moving house as soon as we can. I am currently working on getting SSI for my mental issues, and attempting to get my nerves to a place where I can work at least part time so that we are comfortable.

With my nerve issues, there is no guarantee I'll ever be able to hold a job for any length of time again, so I will be returning to the world of self-employment so that I can take time off when I need to deal with personal issues.
