A very Special Wedding

Back in June,my eldest grand daughter got engaged, and we travelled to the USA to celebrate with the family. We returned again for the wedding on 28th December 2013. Read on to find out more about it.

A very Special Wedding

On 27th December last we flew out from Heathrow to attend the wedding of my eldest grand daughter Becky. As I live in England, I am only able to see my American family once a year, although this year was an exception, as we had also visited in June, when Becky and Nate got engaged. We had 2 reasons for visiting then, as her youngest sister Ashley graduated from High School to University.

This wedding was even more special as were were able to take my youngest grand daughter Imogen, who lives near to us in England. She has not seen her cousins for 10 years, when she was only 3 years old and they visited us in England, she is now nearly 14, and as far removed from the impish little girl that had fun with them in 2003 that she could be. The only communication that she has had with them is via Facebook.

I had a longish dress with lilac flowers on a lime green background, and I had matched it with a lilac jacket and shoes. Imogen had a grey silvery dress with very pretty shoes. She has long reddish auburn hair, which is very striking.

What a beautiful day it was.

It was a beautiful sunny day, which was a relief after leaving the storms and rain of England behind us.We arrived at the church an hour before the ceremony, and I was invited to go downstairs to see the bride and bridesmaids in their dresses. Before I went down, I glanced around at the inside of the very beautiful church, there was such a feeling of serenity and happiness within the walls.

When I saw Becky, she looked so beautiful it took my breath away. I was unable to prevent my mind jumping back to 25 years previously when her mother had stood there in her dress, with her blonde hair drawn back on top of her head, and her natural grace and beauty shining through. Becky looked so like her, it brought a lump to my throat.

Nate's mother Pam had helped very much with the planning of the wedding, and had gone with her to pick her wedding dress. What an admirable choice they had made. Becky is tall and slim, the lace bodice of her dress fitted her perfectly accentuating her tiny waist. The dress had a very full skirt , it's simple style to me enhanced the beauty of it, and there was a long train, which flowed out behind her. The whole look was exquisite.

The bridesmaids had black shift dresses, they all looked very elegant, as well as friends, her two sisters were included, Katey and Ashley were both Matrons of honour. The man came round to hand out button holes and floral bouquets, and mine was lilac, which was a perfect match for my outfit.

The Wedding Service

When it was time to take our seats, we sat in the front row on the left, and the grooms family were on the right. His brother David was the best man. Unlike in England, the bridesmaids did not escort Becky down the aisle, they took their positions at the side, and she walked slowly down on her father's arm. When he took his position in the front row, she suddenly turned went over, and spontaneously hugged him,it was a most emotional moment, and I think that hug was saying " Thanks Dad for everything." Tom has had to be both mother and father to his 3 girls for the last 17 years.

The service was beautiful, Becky herself was quite emotional, and the love that flowed between them was uplifting to see. Nate's calmness soothed her, and when they left the church joyously as man and wife, there was not a dry eye in the house.

Then it was time for photographs, both inside and outside the church. After that they signed The Wedding Registry , and some of the Wedding guest went onto the reception. We were taken by car to a local beauty spot, which had a bridge over a small lake, and we walked along the decking area until the photographer was satisfied she had the right background.

It was at that point my new shoes started to hurt, and I wasn't the only one. I noticed with amusement that Becky had taken hers off, her dress was so long that it wasn't noticeable, but in my case it would have been.

The reception

It was twilight when we headed on to the reception, and the elegance of the hotel where it was being held was apparent as soon as we entered. There were drinks and nibbles served first, and on a table next to the bar were photographs of both the bride and the groom's parents when they got married, and also the grand parents. There were also bottles to sign with messages of good luck, which they will open on their anniversary.

When we were seated at our tables, the first person to make a speech was my son in law Tom. He thanked me and grandad for making the trip from England, and we got a round of applause, and i replied that it was my pleasure, and it certainly was! Then he spoke about people who wanted to come, but couldn't make it because of difficulties and illness, and how we missed them.

He then spoke very movingly to his 3 girls, saying how much they all missed their mother, and how proud she would have been of them all, and yet felt she was there with us all. I could feel the tears in my eyes, even after 17 years, I feel sadness and regret that Anita was taken from us at only 29, and for them to lose their mother so young, has never seemed right.

But we all know my feisty daughter would have expected us to be strong and carry on, and I comfort myself with the knowledge that her spirit lives on in her remarkable daughters.

Becky has her guts and determination, and also her stubbornness, Katey looks the most like her, and Ashley has her scattiness and wonderful sense of humour. She always saw the funny side of everything, but she also had a very self disciplined and organised character, and a strong sense of independence, which in her absence, the girls have all developed, as well as a closeness to one another which is a lasting bond.

Tom has every right to be proud of his daughters, and they know he has done a wonderful job of bringing them up on his own and holding down a very important position in the FBI. It has not been easy for any of them, but now they are growing up, life is getting betterr for him.

Then the best man spoke about his closeness to his brother, and Katey gave a very amusing speech about an occasion when Nate mistook her for Becky soon after they first met. Ashley also made a speech ,it was very emotional for her because as the youngest, she always looked up to Becky as a sort of mother figure. But her happiness for her sister was obvious, and it was clear to see that the whole family truly welcome Nate into their fold.

Toasts were drunk

So then we dined and raised our glasses to the happy couple. There is nothing more uplifting than seeing a newly married couple so much in love, their glances at each other, and the expression in their eyes is a joy to behold.

After we had eaten, Becky and her Dad danced together, then Nate and his Mum, then of course the bride and groom together. After that everyone joined in. I have to confess I only danced once, and Keith not at all. Modern music is hard to dance to, but I enjoyed watching the others having such fun. I could not dance without a partner, and even Imogen preferred to watch, being at that age where she easily feels embarrassed.

As the music and the wine flowed, everyone had fun, there were lots of lovely people to chat to, and before we knew it, it was almost time to end. The final celebration took place out in the hallway where we all lit sparklers, and went outside the door forming a long pathway of light for the happy couple to pass along. It had started to rain by now, but nothing could dampen our spirits It was a truly magnificent ending to what had been a very special day.

DEAR BECKY AND NATE, I WISH YOU ALL THE HAPPINESS IN THE WORLD, YOU TRULY DESERVE IT! XXXX

You made us feel we were there too Carol to share in the happiness of the occasion. You have every right to be a satisfied grandmother but I feel for you for the absence of your dear daughter, Anita, but she should have been there in spirit to bless the occasion - siva
