While most people deny the existence of true love, there is no doubt that true love does exist. Those who have been hit can bear witness to this fact. What are the signs of true love, and what factors make it blossom?

A love note to my sweetheart

TO MY SWEET!

Dear,
You can go on forever asking me what love is and whether it truly does exist. Well I know it does exist mainly because I have experienced it before and will really love to have such feelings that go with it overwhelming me once again.

It will take an uncanny and uncommonly talented play-actor to fool a discerning mind on the existence of love, where there is none. Whether you believe in the existence of love or not, anyway, some self-test would help you answer whether there is love or not. What we do most times is stifle the love we have for someone out of fear of the unknown, or for fear of being hurt… especially being hurt again! But no matter how strongly we want to stifle it, it is there if it is there!

It is an involuntary action over which we have no control. It is like a thunderbolt, and once it hits you, you’re struck, and you’ll find yourself doing things you never thought you could do. The object of love suddenly means something to you, while you suddenly get inextricably attached to him or her. This is no thesis in requirement for the partial fulfilment of one’s degree course; so let me spare you too much talk.

Having said that, all the same, recall that the past one week or so has seen a change of attitude from us towards each other. We feel sad when we went to bed without hearing each other’s voice, or reading from each other- yesterday was a case in point. We have become a bit reckless with the amount of money and time we spend talking to each other on the phone; now, it’s like we want to talk forever- nothing matters anymore! We now preoccupy each other’s mind even in our usual busy schedules. We feel each other’s pains and share in each other’s joy. We’ve never been empty actually- we’ve always had someone around us, but suddenly they’re now somehow taking the back stage because we never felt for them what we now feel for each other. Just like we are rediscovering ourselves! What else do you call love?

Well you can forgive my constant refrain to and obviously loose use of the word “we, we, and we”. I don’t have to use that word, because inasmuch as I feel and think you’re showing me some love, I can’t bet on that because human beings can act. I can only vouch for myself. I know something… someone has taken hold and control of my life. I am no more the same!

Nevertheless, if truly our feelings are akin, as we claim, sweet, then the truth remains that we didn’t choose to start doing all these; we’ve just found ourselves doing them. Call it “compelled by an inexplicable force!” When it comes to love, we hardly choose. According to Mignon McLaughlin, “We choose those we like; with those we love, we have no say in the matter.” The only other thing that is important is that those we love love us back. “When you love someone, it's something. When someone loves you, it's another thing. When you love the person who loves you back, it's everything.”

Sweet, because we don’t have control over whom we love, we often find ourselves casting outside reasoning, and “foolishly” following our heart. That is when we find ourselves groping unsuccessfully for answer to a question as simple as “Why do you love me?” We may find it difficult to answer, but suddenly we feel a golden glow to our face, and there’s a warm feeling all over our body; our soul is awakened and our eyes opened. In its trail, whatever it is we feel leaves billions of small memories in our heart, just a sure reminder that it does exist. Love Exists! It is an intense feeling of deep affection. . . . I feel that for you! Love Exists!

You’ve brought out some feelings in me, some feelings that until recently had remained dormant. Your text messages turn my head. There is this claim that lovebirds consider messages as the best option for expressing their feelings. Messages strengthen the bonding and give the relationship a new meaning. When expressed, they add a new reason to be together and they give a new dimension to life.

It may interest you to know that last Friday marked a turning point in my life in what I feel for you. I was at such a crossroad, you may not have known it, but you gave me company with your messages, and you gave me a reason to go on. Ever since, sweet, I’ve not been the same. I have a girl, it shouldn’t be news to you anyway, but I don’t feel for her what I feel for you now. As a man, there are things I need, little gestures as those you gave me to show you care. Feelings should be mutual and they should also be mutually expressed. Truth is that you’ve taken over my life!

Again, you asked me whether love does exist. Well I think or rather know it does exist. For one, sweet, I came out here to do some work on a book. But what have I done instead? I’ve taken the entire day to write you this message expressing my mind. Somehow, the book didn’t matter; you did!

Finally, sweet, consider this:
“Silently you walk on holding each other’s hands. Your heart engulfed in the beauty of love. Softly he pulls you closer and whispers those three magical words into your eyes: ‘I love you’. The whole world comes at a halt. Your heart starts beating faster. You have tears in your eyes and you curl up tight in his arms. He hums on the tune “Fly Me to the Moon” by Frank Sinatra, and you fall in it all over again. NOTHING IN LIFE CAN BE AS BEAUTIFUL AND AS PRECIOUS AS BEING IN LOVE. IT GIVES YOU STRENGTH, AND AN INSPIRATION TO TAKE THE JOURNEY CALLED LIFE.

I LOVE YOU SWEET!
