An index of the many plants and trees in our yard along with what, who, and/or why there is an emotional attachment.

A Tour Of Our Yard

In heart-touched times throughout my life,
Times with others whose pain I have shared,
I’d foster a plant to honor that muse,
And name the seedling from the force it was reared.

In our front yard stands an evergreen tree.
I called him “My Seaward Son.”
Planted when my son joined the Navy.
Stands for pride, sorrow, and love for this one.

Housing the flourishing Rabbit’s Foot Fern,
Is a stump by the young pecan tree,
An etched stone, shaded beneath the stump says…
“Grow Old Along With Me.”

Near the drain is a vine of deep ivy,
For a pain grown from envy, greed, lust.
She’s there to remind me that life is still good,
“Twisted Sister” can’t destroy all the trust.

Off to one side is a stout fichus tree,
New growth covers bad weather scars.
“Faith” stands for strength in our marriage, our love.
Her resilience dusts the stars.

Toward the side is a tree with a tall sturdy trunk
But his branches were hurt by his base.
He was planted for our son, our special sweet-pea,
And his name, “My Exceptional Jace.”

My rosebush, tho plagued with insects and disease,
Blossoms at least once a year.
She represents determination
My “Pink Kitty” who’s thorns I don’t fear.

My green Spider Plant with his artistic swell,
Will endure and gracefully grow.
He’ll fill the void of the emptying oak,
With a tapestry guise. That’s “Joe.”

A sweet Magnolia majestically grows,
So proud, so strong, such panache.
So ‘southern’ in roots and up-bringing.
This beauty I simply call, “Ash.”

A bayonet cactus with poisonous tips
Grows at the base of the Cedar.
“Dilly”, like the ivy, stands for lies and deceit
Poisons all lives who would heed her.

By the gate grows my dark Pulmaria.
Her name is “Hawaiian Hon”
She means love, adventure, and travel
With roots that were started in fun.

Tho I have many more, all planted with care,
I’m sure new ones will be in my future.
Each will be named for a person, event
Each from it’s own special nurture.

Gardening is always an activity I enjoy doing when I'm stressed. It helps to take my mind off of things!
