The transformation of a ‘man’ whom in fact is a "God" before the eyes of mortal men and the healing of a child possessed by an impure spirit. The lessons learned in a space of two great moments in the lives of these people.

Jesus’s transfiguration and the healing of a possessed child

It seemed endless the walk up the mountain, the Lord Jesus was talking to James and John as I followed listening to their conversation. Look back I could see the road below and the green grass as it lay against the mountain. Rocky covered with trees here and there. Birds flying about and the sky are crisp and clear, not a cloud to be seen.

Looking over the pictures view over the mountain taking in the beauty of the towns below I was awe struck when I turned around and looked upon the Lord Jesus. It seemed as if my eyes were playing tricks on me, I saw the Lord Jesus standing before me in a dazzling white robe, and I have never seen anything so white in all my life. At first I believed that I was day dreaming and then to top things off I saw standing next the Lord Jesus Elijah and Moses and they were talking to Jesus.

My whole body was shaking and I felt the sweat in the back of my neck. It seemed as though I was dreaming but out of fear and uncertainty I wanted to say something, anything and on my first but feeble reaction is said: “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters – one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.”
While we all were standing there a cloud cover all of us and in the cloud we could hear a voice “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!” Dumbfounded I looked around me and within a blink of an eye there was only the Lord Jesus, myself and James with John.

At first no one said a word and on looked at the Lord Jesus it struck me that we were in the presence of a Holy man. As we walked down the mountain I tried to get my mind around what just happened when the Lord Jesus said: “Peter, James and John you are not to utter a word about what just happened on the mountain until the Son of Man has risen from the dead.”

Walking just behind the Lord Jesus we were in discussion about the ‘rising from the dead meant.’ Finally burning with curiosity we asked “Why do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?”

Looking at us the Lord Jesus stops and said “To be sure, Elijah does come first, and restores all things. Why then is it written that the Son of Man must suffer much and be rejected? But I tell you, Elijah has come, and they have done to him everything they wished, just as it is written about him.”

On entering the town we saw the other disciples surrounded by a large crowd of people and they were arguing with the teachers of the law. The people standing around us turned and looked at the Lord Jesus and they were overwhelmed and in awe of him ran towards the Lord to greet him.

The Lord Jesus walked up to where the disciples and teachers were standing and asked them: “What are you arguing with them about?”

A man in the crowd answered “Teacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech. Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not.”

Looking at the man the Lord Jesus said “You unbelieving generation, how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me.”

“Move” the man said as he pushed his way forward towards the Lord Jesus with his son on hand. As the boy stood in front of the Lord Jesus the spirit in the child threw him to the ground. Making the boy convulse and rolling around foaming at the mouth.
The man stood next to the Lord Jesus and as they both looked at what was happening to the child. “How long has he been like this?” Asked the Lord Jesus. “From childhood,” he said “It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.”

Jesus reiterated “if you can? Everything is possible for one who believes.” On which the father of the child said “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”

When the Lord Jesus saw that the crowd was running towards the scene, he rebuked the impure spirit. “You deaf and mute spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.” As the Lord spoke these words the spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently and came out. It seemed as though the child was dead, there was no color in his face as he lay there. The crowd was sure the child was dead even stating it while they looked on.

The Lord Jesus took him by his hands and lifted him to his feet, and he stood up. Leaving the crowd the Lord Jesus went indoors and his disciples asked him privately “Why couldn’t we drive it out?” The Lord Jesus looked at them answering them “this kind can come out only by prayer.”
